Giants crush Redskins

After a 45-12 thrashing of the Forskins on Monday night, the Giants’ playoff picture is still in focus. At 8-6 the G-Men are currently out of the playoffs, but luckily the season doesn’t end today. Teams still have two more games to play, and the Giants are only one game behind Dallas for the final Wild Card spot. Here is what the NFC playoff standings look like as of now:

  1. Taints, 13-1
  2. Vikes, 11-3
  3. Iggs, 10-4
  4. Cards, 9-5

Wild Card leaders: Packers, 9-5; Cowgirls, 9-5.

And the Giants lurk only one game back at 8-6; if they win out and can finagle a tie with Dallas, they’ll have the tie-breaker courtesy of the season sweep and/or division record. Or whatever it is they use to determine tie-breakers in the NFL.

The G-Men scored on their first four possessions and never looked back. On top of that, Big Blue held the Skins to a three-and-out on their first three touches. Wow. If the D continues to play like this no team will beat them. The defense faced the minimum number of plays through the middle of the second quarter. Then again, they were playing Jason Campbell and the Redskins…so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Despite the obviously weak opponent, the G-Men looked like a different team than the one I’ve been watching the past few weeks. They looked like they actually wanted to win on D. Not to mention the running game. Plus they didn’t try to give away the game like they did in Week 2 against these guys. The Terrell Thomas pick-six really sealed the deal in the third; it was over after that.

They can’t play the Redskins again these final two weeks, unfortunately. That’s a shame because the Men In Blue own the ‘Skins as of late; New York won its fourth straight game against Washington and increased the lead in the all-time series to 89-61-4. Nice.

I don’t know what Zorn was thinking with that play at the end of the first half. Why would you go for a TD when you need to get points on the board and you’re in FG range? Especially after a timeout. If I was Dan Snyder I would have went into the locker room at halftime and fired his ass in front of the whole team. I was embarassed for both teams, but I’ll take it.

That Cartwright play on the opening drive of the second half made me think the Giants were trying to give away the game. “Same old Giants,” I said to myself. But, more or less, the team stood strong after that and held up. Thank God. It could have gotten ugly if it played out like the last time these teams met. Sometimes the Giants have trouble putting teams away, not last night though.

Even with a few bed-shits from the team these past few weeks (last night’s game excluded), I still think they make the playoffs. Everybody knows Dallas will choke on a fat cock at some point the rest of the way (keep in mind: it’s December!), so they should overtake or at least tie the Cowgirls. But regardless of what Big D does, the Giants still have the Panthers and Vikes left to play. The Panthers looked real good against the Vikes Sunday night and the Vikes seem to be headed towards one of Favre’s patented late-season swoons.

The bottom line is if the NYG sweep these last two games, they should find themselves in the tournament. I think the Cowboys get the piss beaten out of them by the Iggs the last game of the season. Just like last year. So they definitely have a chance.

The only question is: do the New York football Giants make any noise if the get into the playoffs? The answer: if the team continues to play like they did last night, expect another Lombardi Trophy. However, if the D lays down and Sheridan doesn’t get his thumb out of his sphincter, expect more ‘Giants Failure’ videos on Youtube.

Prediction: the G-Men take this final game at Giants Stadium and crush the Panthers, 35-17. Then they go to Minnesota and upset a reeling Vikings team to shock the NFL world and grab the final Wild Card spot.
