A Meadowlands Superbowl?

Good morning on what is shaping up to be a Giant Tuesday for us all!

We shall soon know whether there powers that be (i.e., NFL owners) are going to select the new Meadowlands stadium as the site of the Super Bowl in XLVIII.  Per Gary Myers of the nydailynews, the new Meadowlands is the clear cut favorite to win the game (over south Florida and Tampa).  It’s about time.

Forget all of the feigned arguments about the New York/New Jersey weather, this is how the system is supposed to work.  Build a brand new, state of the art facility and you host a Super Bowl.  It’s good for the league, good for business, and good for the New York Giants and Jets franchises, respectively.  and if you are the league and Roger Goodell, hard to justify not giving the New Meadowlands stadium the big game given that New York is, was, and always will be the center of the media and sports world.  This should not be a difficult vote.  That said, we will be glad when the vote is over and certainty is among us.

On the Giant front, OTA(s) are over.  Don’t read too much into Jonathan Goff running with the first teamers at last week’s voluntary minicamp.  Goff has to be considered a leading candidate, but don’t count out rookie Philip Dillard.  I do think it is fair to count out linebacker Gerris Wilkinson, who is making the transition from the weakside over to the middle this year.  While Wilkinson played the mike spot effectively in college, his injury history makes him a long shot to secure and keep the starting job.  Could Wilkinson surprise?  Maybe, but I wouldn’t put all my eggs in the Wilkinson basket.

Welcome to a true training camp positional battle, one that will be watched closely.  Stay Blue!
