It’s almost time for Sunday Night Football: Giants vs Eagles.
That’s right, this Sunday Night, it will be prime time gridiron action between two NFL teams that have faced off 164 times. Starting with a matchup that took place in October of 1933. To put that in perspective of how long ago that was, understand George Carlin lived a long time, 71 years, in fact, he’s been gone now for over six years, but even George wasn’t born until 1937. RIP George C.
That’s how old this rivalry is. And — the Giants own it all-time: 85-77-2.
To get some better understanding of this Giants vs Eagles rivalry, I asked my colleague Anthony Valerio to give us some insight on that happenings of this epic blood feud. Here’s what he had to say:
"There are very few rivalries that are as deep rooted as Giants-Eagles. From the Giants infamous botched kneel down which brought on the Parcells era, to the infamous Miracle in the Meadowlands 2 in 2010, to Victor Cruz making a name for himself against Philly in 2011. There have been many battles between these two teams and quite frankly it’s safe to say both the players on both teams, as well as their fan bases cannot stand each other. Now this year with both teams looking to take control of the NFC East, we can expect another physical matchup from these two teams. Many Giants fans would say the reason why Philly fans hate them so much is out of jealousy of the Giants’ Super Bowl success (winning 4) to the Eagles still searching for their first one. Eagles fans are very passionate about their team, but are always reminded by Giants fans that no matter how many times Philly may defeat Big Blue, they are still inferior because of their lack of Lombardi’s. The Eagles and their fans are out to prove they are a championship worthy team and will love nothing more than to prove that against a despised division foe. The Giants will look to show Philly that their confidence is nothing but pure arrogance thinking they can beat Big Blue and will love nothing more than to embarrass Philly in their own house."
Anthony then added this tweet to hammer home his point:
No matter the Eagles trophy case, Sunday Night Football will be about one thing: Giants vs Eagles. This season, the Eagles are 4-1, Chip Kelly has the offense humming and they will offer the Giants a tough challenge in all three phases of the game.
This time, the game will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, a place where the Giants have won two out of the last three battles since 2011. But that’s no advantage for the G-Men, the Eagles will come to play Sunday. Their offense has put up over 30 points in all but their one loss to San Francisco.
Lately, the Giants offense has been scoring well also, putting up 105 points in the past three games. Yet, the last time these two teams did battle, only 22 points ‘total’ were scored, so it’s not safe to just expect a high scoring shootout.
Regardless of the style of game it becomes, for both teams in this epic rivalry, it’s a must-win game. Giants fans would say especially for the Giants, but that’s only because they feel the Philadelphia Eagles in general, don’t matter.
