Injury Update: Latest On New York Giants’ Robert Ayers

New York Giants’ defensive end Robert Ayers unfortunately tore a pectoral muscle in Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ayers will miss the remainder of the season and is yet another name added to the injured reserve list. Acquired from the Denver Broncos via free agency, he has played a key role on the Giants’ defense as a solid pass rusher as he was known to make big stops every now and then.

Be it that defense as a whole has been awful, Ayers was one of the bright spots on that part of the team. In fact, Ayers has been one of the only consistent members on defense, second on the team in sacks with five. The loss of Ayers will be a tough pill to swallow since it leaves a void that the Giants don’t have the quality on their depth chart to replace.

Finishing out the season with any positive traction on defense will be a true challenge. A 3-9 NFL team does not have the right to blame their failures entirely on injuries. However in the case of the Giants, injuries have unquestionably had a negative effect on the teams win total.

Defensive linemen Mathias Kiwanuka, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, cornerback Prince Amukamara, cornerback Walter Thurmond, and star reviver Victor Cruz are just some of the key Giants players who’ve been lost to injury. Adding injury to insult, possible the only statistic the Giants do lead the league in is “number of players on IR.”

The Giants lead the NFL with a startling total of 20 players on IR. I suppose you could say the Giants should be used to it, even know how to overcome injuries by now. It simply doesn’t seem to be anything close to reality as this is yet another season riddled with more injuries than anything else.

Overall, injuries have helped cripple this team beyond belief as now yet another star on defense in Ayers is gone for the year. Injuries or not, like previously said, this is not an excuse to be 3-9, more like yet another slice to the unfortunate, losing ridden pie. Losing Ayers will not help the Giants one bit as at 3-9, very few things will and could be looked at as a positive.
