2015 NFL Draft Profile: WR Phillip Dorsett, Miami

facebooktwitterreddit

Phillip Dorsett is one of the big mysteries of the 2015 NFL Draft. Some draft guys will tell you that Dorsett is a first round talent. Pointing to his speed and his 24.2 yards average per reception in 2014, they will tell you that he has game changing talent. Others grade him as a second or third round talent, pointing to his less than ideal frame and his limited route tree.

Dorsett is obviously a big play threat down the football field. In the past two seasons he has averaged over 20 yards per reception; his lowest average was 10.5 yards in his Freshman season. Dorsett’s biggest strength however may be his ability to pile up YAC (Yards After Catch).

GMENHQ Big Board Ranking: 79th Overall Ranking

Strengths:

More from NY Giants Draft

  • Incredible speed (4.33 yard 40 yard dash)
  • Great Vertical ability
  • Comes back for the football
  • Can make contested catches
  • Great YAC
  • Scored 10 touchdowns in 2014

Concerns:

  • Limited route runner, there are concerns that he’s just a deep threat
  • Not ideal size or frame (5-10 196 lbs.)
  • He may never end up being a number 1 receiver

There is no doubt that Dorsett can be a playmaker in the NFL. With a good receivers coach by his side, he could develop into something special. If I was in the New York Giants war room on draft day I would remind everyone not to over value Dorsett.

He is a deep threat but how do you spend a first round draft pick on somebody who may not be more than that in the NFL. The most receptions that he ever had was in 2012, when he caught 58 passes. He only had 36 receptions in 2014. He has never had more than 871 receiving yards in a season. That’s not round 1 production to me.

Dorsett could be a great playmaker in the NFL. In the second round he is a decent pick. In the 3rd round he is a great value. Dorsett has a special skill set but he needs to prove that he is more than just a coverage burner.
