According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the New York Giants have agreed to terms with former Dallas Cowboys defensive end George Selvie on a 1-year deal worth $1.4 million. Selvie, 28, was taken in the 7th round of the 2010 draft, and bounced around with three teams before landing in Dallas for the 2013 season.

In his first full professional season in 2013, Selvie recorded a career high 7 sacks, while providing a steady contribution in the run game as well. The Giants hope to get a repeat of his 2013 season as he seems to be a key cog in the their defensive line rotation, which already features the likes of Jason Pierre-PaulDamontre Moore, Robert Ayers Jr., and others.

This once again seems to be a low-risk high-reward deal by the Giants who have made a living off that this offseason. Yet another option for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to throw out there to rush the passer, and more importantly, to beef up the Giants run defense which ranked 31st in the league last season.

If the Giants want to become contenders again, defense was their area of weakness to improve upon from last season’s meltdown. While the Giants aren’t known for making splashy moves, this is the kind of player that should thrive in a role that utilizes to his strengths in getting to the ball carrier in a hurry.

Overall, this is a smart move by the Giants to add depth and ensure that they have all the necessary pieces to give opposing teams something to worry about. Spagnuolo has a knack for turning low-key players into superstars based on his defensive scheming.
