NFL Draft: Best Case Scenario For Giants’ Second, Third Rounds

The first day of the NFL draft is officially in the books. All the rumored trades theories ended up never panning out. The most excitement was the fact that some major first round prospects fell into the second round of the draft.

The New York Giants have the 40th pick in the second round of the draft. The Giants magically happen to be in within grasp of both Landon Collins and Randy Gregory, two first round talents who managed to slide.

Both players would be a fantastic addition to the Giants roster. Collins would be the optimal choice if he falls a couple of more places down. Some analysts had the Giants taking Collins at ninth overall. To get him at 40 would be one of the biggest steals in the draft.

Despite his off the field issues, Randy Gregory is still a top 10 talent in most coach’s eyes. The issue is that Tom Coughlin is not the kind of coach that likes to deal with these things. He has zero tolerance for any form of tardiness. Gregory to the Giants may look good on paper, but it seems like a long shot.

If the Giants elect to go defense in the second round, it should be time to visit offense again in the third. They have 74th pick in the third round.

The Giants could really use some insurance at tight end. Larry Donnell is a great tight end, but he needs a lot of time to develop. Daniel Fells got resigned to another short contract, but he’s climbing the ladder in age.

Adding some youth would make sense. I really like Ohio State’s Jeff Heuerman to be the guy the Giants reach for in the third round. He’s six foot two and 254 pounds. He is pretty quick for a man his size and could be a huge threat down the field.

The best case for the Giants in rounds two and three of the draft would be to draft Collins and Heuerman onto their squad. With the edition of Flowers in the first round, the 2015 draft ends up being a huge one for Jerry Reese so far.
