New York Giants: Must Make A Statement In Opener

The New York Giants open the 2015 regular season with a battle on the road against the Dallas Cowboys. In the first real Sunday Night Football game of the season, the nation will have its eyes on the two NFC East rivals. The Giants must make a statement in this game.

There are two reasons why the opening game is critically important. The Giants must win the season opener to avoid their recent trend of slow starts to the season. My keyboard may just break if the Giants go on another 0-6 start like they did in 2013.

It seems like a fast start to the season is imperative for the Giants. This is a team that not only has a history of slow starts but also has a mountain of doubts to chip away at. The Giants are coming off two straight losing seasons, and have lost four straight games to the Cowboys.

Secondly the Giants must make a statement in the season opener because this game is personal. When you lose four straight games to a division rival, when you see that division rival make noise in the postseason, when you see that rival getting hailed as a Super Bowl contender, the game means a lot.

Every game in football is important. There are fewer chances to earn a win in football than there are in any other sport, wins mean a lot and so do losses. However rarely do you see a week 1 game that has a playoff like anticipation to it. Rarely is a week one game a team’s Super Bowl.

It reminds me of when the Baltimore Ravens played the Pittsburgh Steelers to begin their 2011 season. The Steelers had just beaten the Ravens in the playoffs, and this always heated rivalry game meant the world to Baltimore. The Ravens smashed the Steelers relentlessly which gave them momentum for the season. They ended up just falling short in the AFC Championship game.

The point is that this is that type of a game for the Giants. They have an opportunity to send a message not only to the football world, but to themselves. They must beat the Cowboys on the road and make a statement in the first week of the regular season.
