Steve Weatherford Comments: The Real Story Here

Steve Weatherford is making all kinds of headlines after his time as a guest on the Boomer and Carton radio show. He made honest remarks about the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback situation, which ruffled some Eagles feathers. Here is some of what Weatherford said, but mind you the fall out is the real story here.

Here is a link to Aaron Dodson’s fantastic coverage of this story for the Washington Post.

Steve Weatherford says comparing Eagles QBs to cars was actually a compliment

"“I’m the biggest Tim Tebow fan in the world,” Weatherford said, via NJ Advance Media. “I mean, who wouldn’t want their daughter to date a guy like that? I’ll tell you want, I don’t want him taking snaps for my team.”"

And on Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez he had this to say:

"I’m gonna give you a Ferrari that maybe won’t be running all the time, or I’m giving you a nice Cadillac sedan,” Weatherford said. “It’s not the fastest but you know what you’re going to get out of it.”"

He had more to say in both the interview and the social media fallout, what Weatherford said isn’t really what I want to point your attention to. Weatherford came under heavy scrutiny for answering a question honestly. That should be the frustrating thing about this story, no matter what team you root for.

People in the media are so quick to call this a misstep for the Giants punter. It is a groupthink mentality to the top of the political correctness mountain where nobody can tell the truth unless it’s rated G.

I understand that is the world we live in, and sometimes it is a good thing. If Weatherford stepped over the line it would be important that the media not condone his actions.

But Weatherford didn’t step over the line at all. Does he have to praise the Eagles quarterbacks in a patronizing fashion? By the way, last time I checked, the Eagles and Giants are bitter rivals. Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens won’t even call Tom Brady by his name and that’s perfectly okay. Kid gloves and rivalries just don’t mix.

The Eagles quarterback situation is less than appealing. Bradford could work out but is an injury prone quarterback  who’s development has been stunted by his inability to stay on the field. Sanchez is what he is, the man responsible for putting “butt fumble” in our football lexicon. Tebow is just getting back into the NFL after it looked like his playing days were over.

So honestly, I applaud Weatherford for telling the truth. He was honest without crossing the lines with vulgar language, and I doubt that anyone’s feelings got all that bruised. In a time when athlete’s just repeat the same clichés over and over again to avoid trouble, the Giants’ punter just spoke plainly.

There are two morals to this incredibly silly story. The first one being that if you don’t want to hear what athletes have to say, don’t put a microphone in front of them and ask them questions. The second moral being that the Giants punter is awesome!
