Giants Training Camp Battles: who plays free safety?

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Giants training camp is officially underway and the free safety position seems to be the biggest mystery on the entire team. With Quinten Demps and Stevie Brown both departing in the same offseason the Giants have no proven starter at the position and it is anybody’s job to win.

When I say that the free safety is anybody’s job to win, I really mean anybody could get the job. The Giants are not without options at the position. Cooper Taylor, Nat Berhe, Josh Gordy and Jeromy Miles are the four free safeties on the roster. I wouldn’t even rule out Mykkele Thompson who is slated to be Landon Collins’s back up at the strong safety spot.

Cooper Taylor is probably the most versatile player on the list because he can play the nickel or dime cornerback position. Nat Berhe has battled minor injuries this offseason but he should be good to go if the Giants call his name. Berhe is full of so much potential that it would be nice to see him get a shot.

The player that I like the most though is Jeromy Miles. Miles is a former Ravens and Bengals specials teams tackling machine. With the Ravens secondary woes from the past season Miles got a few starts at the free safety position. He grabbed an interception against the Jaguars and showed that he could handle the responsibility.

It will be really interesting to watch during the preseason, who emerges as the free safety of this football team. The Giants will ultimately use training camp as the ultimate barometer for this position battle. Who do you think should be the starting free safety? Let us know in the poll question of the day.
