New York Giants: The Case For Tim Jennings

facebooktwitterreddit

It is no secret that the New York Giants need help in the secondary. The team has had the back end of their defense decimated by injuries. Tim Jennings would be an interesting player to pick up. The 31 year old cornerback could come in and help the Giants secondary.

Jennings was released by the Chicago Bears, a team he had played for since 2010. Jennings was once one of the best players at his position. He thrived in Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 defense. The Bears roster cut could be the Giants treasure. At worst, Jennings would be a quality nickel cornerback for the Giants.

Jennings is not what he used to be. He is an ageing player who has battled some injuries over the past few seasons. But the Giants don’t need him to be a top tier player. They need a quality player that they can give the veteran minimum to that will help their defensive backfield woes.

Jennings could even realistically be moved to the safety position. Even after signing Stevie Brown the Giants are not golden at the position. Jennings is a little older and a little slower but his wealth of experience and high football IQ would make him a very competent option at free safety. It wouldn’t be the first time an old cornerback moved to the back-end of the defense.

The Giants have nothing to lose by bringing in a guy like Tim Jennings. Jennings has been a good player in the NFL for a decade. Jennings could provide veteran leadership to a defense that has many young players. Jennings could very easily be a coach on the field for the Giants. There isn’t a reason not to sign Jennings if you’re the New York Football Giants.
