Giants Vs. Saints: Defense Not Included

facebooktwitterreddit

Well you can’t say that the New York Giants eighth game of the year wasn’t entertaining. The Giants lost to the New Orleans Saints in one of the craziest shootouts ever, 52-49. The quarterbacks had their way in this game but the defensive performance (or lack of a defensive performance) was very troubling.

More from NY Giants News

How many games do you lose when you score 49 points and your quarterback is on fire? The Giants defense was putrid. The defense was non-existent in this game with the exception of an interception. The interception in this game proves that the defense has been more opportunistic than good. Even with that pick six, there is almost nothing nice to say about the defense.

Drew Brees essentially had the perfect day against the Giants defense. He was 40/50 for 511 yards and 7 touchdowns. Brees tied a record for the most touchdowns scored in a game. Eli Manning was only one touchdown short of tying this record himself, which is the most frustrating aspect of all. The Giants allowed one of Manning’s best games of his career to be all for nothing.

The Saints had two receivers get over 100 yards in this game, while four receivers had seven receptions or more. Brandin Cooks scoring easily on a slant pattern that he took 26 yards was really the defining play of this game. The Giants made it that easy for Brees to operate and gave no opposition to the Saints receivers.

The Giants defense has had no pass rush all season. The Giants defense has gotten surgically cut open by quarterbacks all season. While intercepting Matt Cassell three times the prior week for a grind it out kind of win was nice, this blasting from Brees gave the Giants a dose of reality. The Giants have a horrible pass defense and it put pressure on every other part of their team.

You have to give credit to the Giants offense for keeping up with Brees and company. The offense is guilt free in this loss. This is not college basketball, you can’t expect the Giants to score 40 plus points to win a game. The Giants problem isn’t fixable. They don’t have the players to get the job done. They don’t have the pass rushers, they’re playing two strong safeties and they are thin and poor at the cornerback position.

The Giants have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL, which is a passing league. Congratulations must go to the Giants for stifling a inexperienced Tyrod Taylor and the Cowboys third quarterback of the season. I don’t mean to patronize the Giants efforts, but when they have faced a Drew Brees, a Matt Ryan and a Tony Romo this season they have been embarrassed.

Next: New York Giants' Offense Is Ray Of Hope For Rest Of Season

The Giants defense is a problem. The Giants offense has been inconsistent as well, there are a few reasons this team is  at.500 at this point of the season. The Giants offense however is clearly off the hook in this one. The Giants defense needs to go back to the drawing board. It may not get a whole lot better but I know it can’t be much worse than it was on Sunday.
