The New York Giants have been fined and penalized for the walkie talkie fiasco. Find out how the league focused the punishment on the 2017 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants were at the heart of one of the more bizarre stories of the 2016 NFL season. For those who missed it, New York was accused of illegally using walkie talkies during a 10-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 11.

In response to the walkie talkie fiasco of 2016, a punishment has been handed down from the league office.

New York grabbed walkie talkies during the fourth quarter of the three-point win over Dallas. It was a seemingly innocent response to the team’s headsets going haywire. Unfortunately, it broke league protocol because said radios can’t be cut off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN’s NFL Nation, the repercussions have targeted the Giants as an organization, head coach Ben McAdoo, and the team’s draft position.

A drop of 10 picks isn’t necessarily devastating, but it’s still something to account for.

The Giants are attempting to get through the 2017 NFL offseason without taking any significant losses. As Jerry Reese weighs his options in free agency and determines which players are worth bringing back, he’ll be forced to compensate for this slide down the draft board.

140 and 130 aren’t terribly different, but the player whom New York may have been targeting at 130 may not be available at 140

True as this all may be, many around the NFL are of the belief that New York got off light.

There was a working theory that New York could lose one of its draft picks in 2017. Losing position certainly isn’t ideal, but it’s far easier for the organization to manage and overcome than losing the selection altogether.

As for the fines, Raanan reports that coach McAdoo is taking full accountability for his actions.

"“There are no excuses. I deserve to be held accountable for my actions. I accept the penalty and move forward.”"

All New York can do at this point is put the past behind it and prepare to move forward with the offseason.
