The New York Giants entered the 2017 offseason with a need for depth at running back. Jerry Reese made an effort to fill the void by signing Shaun Draughn.

The New York Giants have a promising young running back in 2016 fifth-round draft pick Paul Perkins. The 22-year-old showed flashes of brilliance during his rookie season, albeit with a limited number of touches.

Following the decision to part ways with starting running back Rashad Jennings, however, Perkins’ role was increased and a new void was created.

Through Week 13, Perkins received just 50 carries in 10 appearances. During his final four appearances of 2016, however, he amassed 271 rushing yards, including the 102 he ran for during New York’s 19-10 victory over the Washington Redskins in Week 17.

According to NFL rumors guru Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Giants addressed the need for depth behind Perkins by agreeing to terms with running back Shaun Draughn.

Draughn could be an intriguing addition to the Giants’ running game.

Draughn has produced pedestrian numbers on the ground, amassing just 723 yards on an average of 3.2 yards per carry in 50 games played. He’s an intriguing option in the passing game, however, as well as a capable finisher near the goal line.

Despite receiving just 74 total carries in 2016, Draughn ran for four touchdowns on an underwhelming 49ers team.

Working within a significantly more explosive Giants offense in 2017, it stands to reason that Draughn could see an uptick in his production.

Draughn’s primary value as a player is his ability to work out of the backfield and generate offense as a receiver. He recorded 29 receptions for 263 yards and two touchdowns in 2016, which followed his 27 receptions for 176 yards in just 11 appearances in 2015.

Though Perkins is a valuable and versatile running back with upside, Draughn is an ideal complement who can make a positive impact on third downs.
