As many of you know the voting is finally in and the Hall of Fame results are official. Coach Bill Parcells will be taking the magical ride to Canton, Ohio to get inducted while Michael Strahan will have to wait one more year at least.

Regarding his election to the Hall of Fame, Bill Parcells had this to say:

“I’m honored, I really am,” said Parcells, who was a finalist last year. “It’s just unbelievable. When you start in this business you’re not aspiring to do anything but win games and keep your job. After a while your aspirations change to try to win division and win playoff games. After that to the championship level if you can get there. When it’s all over with, like it has been for me for a few years, you obviously think about it some. I’m just very appreciative of everything.”

New York Giants President and CEO John Mara had the following to say regarding the new Hall of Famer:

I’m very happy for Bill,” “This is long overdue. He’s one of the best coaches in NFL history. He turned our franchise around. We went through a long period in the 1960’s and 70’s when we were a laughing stock. When Bill took over in 1983 he survived a very difficult first year, but then turned us into a perennial playoff contender and won two Super Bowls for us. He coached three other teams and everywhere he went, he had great success. I’m very happy that he will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

According to Giants.com, Bill Parcells will become the 19th player/coach who played a “significant” amount of time with the New York Giants to be elected to the Hall of Fame. The Giants rank are third among all NFL franchises with the number of players/coaches who have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Class act Michael Strahan congratulated Coach Parcells and took to Twitter to quickly talk about his own Canton chances:

Congratulations to the 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. Parcells, Ogden, Allen, Carter and Sapp. Enjoy the well deserved honor….Thanks for the HOF tweets. I Love you all and I hope I eventually make it in. I look at it as a delayed blessing and I have many now!

Certainly, we all hope that Michael will be joining Coach Parcells in the near future.

As always follow us on twitter @gmenhq and @tom_brant

We have spent the last week reviewing the Epic Moments in History of the New York Giants as ranked and photographed by Sports Illustrated. We have re-visited three Super Bowl Championships, 2 NFL Title games , and an NFC Championship game for the ages. It seems like every run the Giants make is something special and deserves a moment not only in Giants history, but the history of the NFL.

February 3rd, 2008: Yes..You guessed it, and it would have been disappointing if we all didn’t agree on this moment in history. The Eli Manning to David Tyree play was indeed the key play in this game. Yes, Brandon Jacobs needed to convert on a fourth and one prior to this play, but the fact that if Eli could have been sacked during the first half of this epic play adds an element that I believe makes it the turning point of the game. If Eli had been sacked on this 3rd and 5 play with just 1:15 to play, who knows what the results would have been. Four plays later Eli hit Burress in the end zone to give the Giants a lead, and the Giants survived for an epic win.

We are chronicling the Giants Epic Moments in history as ranked and photographed by Sports Illustrated. Today we return to what has always been known as the Greatest Super Bowl ever played, but I would think by now that at least one other Giants Super Bowl win could be classified as such.

January 27th 1991: MVP Ottis Anderson rushes for 102 yards and a touchdown and career backup quarterback Jeff Hostetler throws for 222 yards and a TD as Giants hold the ball for more than 40 minutes in 20-19 upset of Buffalo in Super Bowl XXV. Jeff Norwood’s 47-yard FG attempts sails wide right in the final seconds.

Ah, remember when the Super Bowl was still held in January? This was indeed the best Super Bowl ever played at the time. Being in that stadium that day with all the added security, the snipers on the roof, the helicopter circling above, and of course Whitney Houston’s rendition of the National Anthem, is one of the most memorable days of my life. This game can easily be attributed to the greatness of the offense or the defense. The fact that the Giants held the ball for over 40 minutes in the game is remarkable, but the fact that they held it in real time for more than an hour put the mighty Buffalo Bills offense in a terrible spot. The Giants of course won this game behind Jeff Hostetler after Phil Simms had been injured in a game against these same Bills on December 15th. The defense having the ability to hold the Bills to just 19 points is a true testament to the ability of the coaching staff to devise a game plan and the players who executed it to perfection.

Here at GMenHQ we are counting down the Epic Moments in the history of the New York Football Giants as ranked and photographed by Sports Illustrated. The Giants have never had a more dominating year than their first Super Bowl Championship Year in 1986.

January 25 1987: The Giants defeated the Denver Broncos in SB XXI, but no other series epitomized New York’s dominance more than a second-quarter stop of John Elway’s team. On first-and-goal from the one-yard line, Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson and Carl Banks each recorded consecutive tackles for loss or no gain and Denver missed the ensuing 23-yard field goal to improve its 10-7 lead.

This game belonged to the defense in the first half, and to the offense in the second half. The Giants have trailed at halftime of all four of their Super Bowl Wins, but this one didn’t feel like it. The Giants defense had sacked the very mobile John Elway in the second quarter and then made the goal line stand chronicled above. The Giants began the second half by executing a fake punt play on fourth and one and the rout was on. the Giants scored the remaining points in the game while QB Phil Simms completed a remarkable 22 of 25 passes as the Giants went on to win 39-20

We are counting down the 7 most epic moments in Giants history as captured and ranked by Sports Illustrated. We now turn to a more recent history for what is ranked as #4.

February 5th 2012: In Super Bowl XLVI, a repeat title game matchup from just four seasons prior, the Giants were again trailing late in the fourth quarter. With less than four minutes on the clock from New York’s own 12-yard line, Eli Manning hit Mario Manningham for an acrobatic 38-yard catch — just his third grab of the game. The Giants marched down the rest of the field for an Ahmad Bradshaw touchdown with under a minute to go to beat the favored Patriots for the championship once more, 21-17.

While this Super Bowl run and re-match with the Patriots was extremely exciting and certainly a great moment in Giants history, I’m not sure that Mario Manningham should get all the credit. While NBC was looking for the “David Tyree Moment” all game, this was a game that had lots of smaller moments, and not one game-saving play. The Intentional Grounding call, the 12 men on the field to negate Cruz’ fumble, and Chase Blackburn’s interception all come to mind. What I do agree with is that Eli engineered another magnificent game winning drive in the biggest game of the year, while utilizing all his weapons and finding a way to move the Giants the length of the field.

We are counting down the 7 most epic moments in history as chronicled by Sports Illustrated. It’s great to go back and see these black and white photos and re- live some of the greatest moments in team history.

#5: December 9th 1934 The Giants outscored the Bears 27-0 in the fourth quarter for their first NFL title of the playoff era. The contest was remembered as the “Sneakers Game” after Giants players switched to basketball shoes at halftime to better navigate the Polo Grounds’ icy turf.

The turf at the old Polo Grounds had become frozen after a freezing rain the night before the big game. Both teams were struggling with their footing and the Bears led 13-3 into the third quarter. Earlier on one of the Giants players had mentioned to Head Coach Steve Owen that they would be better off wearing sneakers instead of the standard football cleats. In the days before NIKE and every player having multiple shoes in their lockers, this was not an easy change to make. Owen sent Abe Cohen over to Manhattan College to see what he could find. He arrived back at the stadium in the third quarter with 9 pairs of sneakers. The Giants went on to win on three TD runs by a score of 30-13

The Giants have had many historic and epic moments through the years. We are counting down the top 7 as seen in the pictures of Sports Illustrated over the years.

#6 December 30 1956: The Giants hosted the Chicago Bears, who they had tied earlier in the year during an 8-3-1 campaign, at Yankee Stadium for the NFL Championship Game. Led by quarterback Frank Gifford, as well as four other future Hall of Famers in Roosevelt Brown, Andy Robustelli, Emlen Tunnel and Sam Huff — as well as Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry making the respective offensive and defensive calls as coordinators — Gifford was named the MVP and the Giants slaughtered the Bears 47-7 for the franchise’s third NFL title.

Just the thought of having BOTH Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry on the same sideline at once, and neither one of them being or ever becoming the Head Coach of the New York Giants is mind boggling. While both moved on to take their respective teams to multiple championships, the Giants struggled to return to Championship form throughout the late 60′s and 70′s. Many attempts were made by Mr. Mara to have Lombardi return to New York, but he took his commitment to the folks of Green Bay seriously and remained there until 1968. While Landry who left the Giants after the 1959 season remained with the Cowboys until 1988 amassing a team record 250 wins.

The Giants have a great history as we all know, but in the following days we will share with you what Sports Illustrated ranks as the 7 Greatest Moments in pictures.

#7: Facing the two-time defending Super Bowl champion 49ers on the road in the NFC Championship game — a team the Giants had already lost to during the regular season by a score of 7-3 on a Monday Night in San Francisco– the New York defense knocked Joe Montana out of the game for the second time in a playoff game. The Giants scored the game-winning field goal as time elapsed after Lawrence Taylor forced the only turnover late in the fourth quarter as Steve Young and Roger Craig tried to run out the clock. The triumph is most remembered for kicker Matt Bahr yelling, “This is for the troops!” as the team celebrated its 15-13 victory. The first gulf war had just begun. The Giants went on to beat the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, which remains the only one-point win in Super Bowl history, memorable for the wide right field goal by Scott Norwood to close the game, and the great defensive game plan drawn up by defensive coordinator Bill Belichick.

The 49ers outscored the Giants 14-0 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. The Giants were led offensively by starting QB Scott Brunner who threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns.
After missing the play-offs in the 1982-1983 and 1983-1984 seasons the Giants returned the play-offs in the 1984-1985 season. In Wild-Card weekend the Giants beat the LA Rams 16-13 to set up a cross country trip to face the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round for the second time in four postseasons. The Giants entered the game with a 9-7 regular season (10-7 overall) record. The 49ers came into the game with a 15-1 record and had a first round bye in the play-offs.

The game did not get off to a good start for the New York Giants. They were down 14-0 in the first quarter and trailed 21-10 at half-time. Both teams were shut out offensively during the second half. The 49ers won the game 21-10.

The Giants took at 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
After playing three consecutive years in the play-offs, the Giants and 49ers did not meet again until the 1990-1991 season. The two teams met for the first time ever in the NFC Championship game. The Giants entered the game with a 14-3 record. The vaunted and favored 49ers entered the game with a 15-2 record. The 49ers had beaten the Giants earlier that year during the regular season.

This game was all about the field goal kickers. A true battle between Matt Bahr for the Giants and Mike Cofer for the 49ers. The teams matched each other with field goals in the first two quarters and went into half-time tied at six apiece. In the third quarter the Matt Bahr connected again for the Giants. However, John Taylor caught a 61 yard TD pass from Montana to give the 49ers a 13-9 lead entering the fourth quarter. Matt Bahr connected on two more field goals in the fourth quarter and Leonard Marshall destroyed Joe Montana; leading the Giants to a legendary 15-13 victory over the 49ers. (more…)

In anticipation of the New York Giants versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFC Championship, GmenHq will be reliving the Giants versus 49ers playoff history. Each day this week (Monday-Saturday will feature a new game).

New York Giants at San Francsisco 49ers, January 15, 1994, Candlestick Park

The sixth career Play-Off battle between the Giants and 49ers came during the 1993-1994 NFL season. Gone were the names of Montana, Craig, Clark, Banks, Carson, and Reasons. The Giants were traveling across the country to play the 49ers after beating the Vikings 17-1o during Wild-Card weekend. The Giants entered the game with a 11-6 record. The 49ers, coming off a first round bye, entered the game with a 10-6 record.

There are two words that describe this game: Total Domination. From the 1st quarter till the 4th quarter the 49ers dominated and beat down the Giants in all aspects of the game. The 49ers 23-3 at halftime and went on to win the game by a 44-3 score. The game was never in doubt. This was the second largest point difference in the history of the Play-Off series. (more…)

In anticipation of the New York Giants versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFC Championship, GmenHq will be reliving the Giants versus 49ers playoff history. Each day this week (Monday-Saturday will feature a new game).

New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers, January 5, 2003, 3-Com Park (Candlestick Park)

The seventh and most recent Play-Off match up between the Giants and 49ers game on a sunny day in 2003. The Giants entered the Wild-Card matchup against the 49ers with a 10-6 record. The 49ers also entered the game with a 10-6 record and were winners of the NFC West. This game signified the first time in nearly ten years since the Giants and 49ers had met in the play-offs. The last time the two teams met in the Play-Offs was in the 1993-1994 Play-Offs were the 49ers dominated the Giants.

Most Giants fans vividly remember this play-off game. The Giants and 49ers played to a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Giants dominated the 49ers in the second quarter. Beyond outscoring them 21-0 and taking a 28-7 half-time lead, the Giants also out-gained the 49ers almost 3:1 in the second quarter. The Giants eventually extended their lead to 38-14 with roughly five minutes to go in the third quarter. Then the unthinkable happened. The Giants collapsed. The played like the Mets in September. Shockey ran his mouth and dropped a TD pass. The defense couldn’t stop Jeff Garcia. The Giants couldn’t snap the ball. Referees blew calls. Eventually the Giants lost the game. The 49ers outscored the Giants 25-0 in the final 18-20 minutes of the game. The Giants lost the game 39-38 (notice how I said the Giants lost as opposed to the 49ers won). (more…)

The Giants have played a total of five post-season games at Candlestick Park. The Giants have one win and four losses at Candlestick during the Post-Season. The Giants are hoping the 49ers find a new home soon! Here are some of the details about Candlestick Park in advance of Sunday’s game.

The Stadium was built in April 1960 at a cost of roughly 15 million dollars. The City of San Francisco is owner and operator of the the stadium. The Stadium has been home to the 49ers since it opened. During the 52 year history of the stadium, several other sports franchises have also called it home. Most notable the San Francisco Giants called it home until 2000. The Stadium has hosted numerous All-Star Games (Baseball), College Football Games, and Bowl Games. The stadium’s current capacity is 69, 732.

Candlestick Park is known for many things. However, it may be most known for the famous Earth Quake before the start of Game Three of the World Series. Many people have credited the design of the stadium with saving the lives of people inside of the stadium. Also, earlier this season, while the 49ers were hosting a Monday Night Football game the lights went out. Numerous times! A transformer blew outside of the stadium.

The Giants are hoping they can turn off the lights on the 49ers this Sunday evening

Stay tuned to GmenHQ for all your Giants-49ers coverage

Clay Matthews has a hard time getting over things. Yet again, Matthews, the star of Green Bay’s defense is chirping to the media that the New York Giants had no business beating them in the playoffs last year.

“The fact is, (the Giants) didn’t beat us; we beat ourselves,” Matthews claimed to Yahoo! Sports. “We picked the most inopportune time to play our worst ball”

This is the second time the Packers have chimed in to say they gave the NFC Divisional playoff game away, rather then recognizing the Giants flat out, played better on the bigger stage.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this off-season “It’ll always bother me, I feel like we beat ourselves in this playoff game. Or better yet, we didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game.”

Did Green Bay forget when they met in the regular season? That they needed an unbelievable drive to win with a field goal? If you didn’t watch football you would think the Packers beat the Giants by 50 the way they’re talking.

Giants Captain and Defensive end Justin Tuck has taken notice too. Tuck fired back at Matthews (a rarity for Tuck and the Giants this off-season).

“Thank you for giving us the game, Clay. I appreciate it a lot”

Tuck, who has been pretty mum on all the back and forth off-season delivered a little more context.

“When they fumbled the ball, I think it was us that stripped it out. We sacked them. It was us who beat their O-linemen and got to (Aaron) Rodgers”

Clay Matthews has some maturing to do if he ever wants to get back to the Super Bowl. I understand being upset when a 9-7 team comes into your stadium, under the lights, and beats your 15-1 football team on the way to another Super Bowl. But come on Clay, show a little class and take it like a man.

Chalk it up to another loser, picking at the Champs.

Devin Thomas, who was originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft, retired at the young age of 25 on Saturday. Thomas had signed a deal with the Chicago Bears in the off season, but decided to call it quits this weekend.

Thomas, who made two huge Special Teams plays during the NFC Championship game in San Francisco, was a player who had put his ego aside and played to the best of his abilities for Coach Coughlin and the New York Giants. He never whined about wanting more playing time, or having his role reduced to a special teams player. He played hard every play, and was a major contributor to the Giants Super Bowl run. He says now that his goal was to win a championship, and he did, so off to do something else he goes.

Those of us who were at the Giants Redskins game last December will also remember a very frightening moment that probably has a lot to do with Devin’s decision. On the final play of the first half Devin was hit in the head and lay on the turf, motionless for most of the time. The band that was scheduled to play at halftime was kept on the sideline, and then sent back to the locker room as Devin remained on the turf. He was carted off the field as the players began to return for the second half kickoff.

Thankfully Devin was cleared to play and seemed to suffer no physical diabilities, but mentally it had to weigh on his mind.

We thank Devin for all his contributions and hard work…and as always welcome him into the Giants Family for Life.

The NFL draft is always an exciting time for the fans, players, and coaches. In the days leading up to this year’s draft, Super Bowl champion Jason Pierre-Paul made his way around New York City, appearing on news broadcasts, television shows, and for various public relations events. I caught up with him at the Axe pre-draft event on Wednesday, April 25 at Spin NYC, where he and Kate Upton went head-to-head in competitions testing their athletic prowess, balancing abilities, and even their drawing skills.

Cat: I see you’ve been busy these last couple of days – I even saw you on the morning news earlier today. You must be exhausted!

JPP: Definitely, but I think I’ve been doing a great job

Cat: It’s an honor to be interviewing you, I’m a Giants fan and obviously have become a huge fan of yours over the last couple of years.

JPP: That’s what’s up.

Cat: So here we are on the eve of the draft, could you tell our readers a little about your draft day experience?

JPP: Let me take you back. First of all, I didn’t know where I was going. It didn’t really matter if it was the first round or second round, either way I would’ve been the player I am today. The Giants picked me at the 15th pick and they made a great pick, and I am happy to be here today. Honestly, draft day is crazy, but I wasn’t nervous at all.

Cat: Well, you knew you were getting drafted early didn’t you?

JPP: Nah I didn’t. I didn’t know if I was going first round or second round. I didn’t really care—like I said I still would’ve been the player I am today. Once they put me out there I was going to do what I had to do.

Cat: How has New York been to you so far?

JPP: It’s been great. New York is a crazy place to stay, a lot of people walking around, I love it. I like the fans too, they’re crazy. I’ll tell you one thing though, once you do something wrong they will let you know, they will boo you. Otherwise the fans are great here you’ve got to love them.

Cat: I was actually at the parade this year. How was that experience for you?

JPP: That was a hell of a parade. I thought it was never going to end. It was a long parade I actually jumped down and went into the stands. It was fun, I hope we have one this year.

Cat: How does it feel to have contributed so much, not only to the Giants but to the NFL, this early in your career? You made the Pro Bowl, you have a Super Bowl ring, what’s next for JPP?

JPP: What’s next for me? Keep hitting it. I want to get better and better—if you think I was good this year than wait until next year. I want to see more 90 jerseys in the stands – you know how that goes, you don’t want to buy a jersey until you see what that player can do.

Cat: Has there been a player that has been like a mentor to you?

JPP: I’d say all the guys have been mentors to me, I’m not even going to lie. Especially in the D-line room, we know we’re the heart of the defense so we talk a lot. So, one mentor, no, we all talk a lot and we help out each other and go out and play hard every week.

Cat: Given the rumors flying, do you think by this time next week Osi will still be a Giant?
