Charlotte, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have hired New York Giants senior pro personnel analyst David Gettleman as their general manager. The team announced the decision Wednesday afternoon after interviewing Gettleman earlier in the day.

A person familiar with the situation says the Panthers also interviewed Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson on Wednesday. The person said the Panthers on Tuesday interviewed Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp for the position. The person spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the Panthers have not announced who they interviewed for the position.

Gettleman replaces longtime Panthers GM Marty Hurney, who was fired six games into the season. Carolina finished the season 7-9.

Some thought Marc Ross would be the man to be hired away from the Giants first. Ross is interviewing in San Diego, as well as with other teams. The Giants ability to uncover un drafted free agents such as Victor Cruz and Stevie Brown, along with discovering raw talent players like JPP, has led many teams to the Giants door for their next chief executive.

Good luck David, and Thanks for all the hard work.

Monday Night’s match-up was a battle of two last place teams, the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. Each team was fighting for some respect on nationally televised Monday Night Football.

Cam Newton has been struggling in his second year as a pro, but looked like his old self again, against a beaten up Eagles team. He threw 18 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Newton also rushed for two touchdowns with a total of 52 yards. A nice night for his fantasy owners.

The one positive that came out of this game for the Eagles was the performance of rookie running back Bryce Brown. Brown rushed for a club rookie record with 178 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Behind Newton’s performance, the Panthers were victorious 30-22. For the Eagles, this is their 7th straight loss. Both teams still have sad records of 3-8. It’s safe to say that both of these teams have their sights on the upcoming draft, not the playoffs.
