The World Champion N.Y. Giants addressed a big need by selecting RB David Wilson. So where do they go from here? The next 2 biggest needs to address are OL and TE. The question is do you address the need, or take best available player on the board? Chances are TE Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen will be off the board. If either are still there, I think you have to grab one of them. There are quite a few OL still available. Cordy Glenn, Jonathon Martin, Mike Adams, Amini Silatolu and Peter Konz. If any of them are there when the Giants pick at 63 it would be a steal and a must pick, after these players there is a large drop off at their prospective positions.

The Question becomes what to do if the Giants pick comes after those players are no longer available, but there is a player there that may not address a critical need but is high on the boards? If there is such a thing. Do you take a DE like Andre Branch? He could help considering the uncertainty of Osi’s situation. Maybe Harrison Smith or Janoris Jenkins is still available, can you ever have too many DB’s? WR’s A.J. Jenkins, Chris Givens or a player I really love Mohamed Sanu could all very well be available. Do you stick to get what we need? I personally feel you go with best available player. Like I said. You can never have too much talent. Whatever they decide it should be an exciting rounds 2 and 3. I look forward to seeing where they go.

A very interesting selection from Reese and the G-Men last night. It was a real head scratcher. A projected 2nd round pick, the RB from Virginia Tech is talented, he has breakaway speed, has the ability to break tackles in the open field, has another gear when he breaks free. He also has decent hands. I’m sure there will be some comparisons to Ahmad Bradshaw.

Unfortunately there seems to be a bit of a downside that makes him a bit like the last 1st round RB the Giants seleted, Ron Dayne. Wilson is an indecisive runner and hesitates at the line when there is not a clear hole and starts running east and west. That is never a good thing in the NFL. He could be a help in the return game with his speed and tackle breaking ability and has had a 92 yd return, but I’m sure sure that makes him 1st round talent.

The Giants did have some bigger concerns than RB that could have been addressed. With players like TE Coby Fleener and O linemen like Konz, Glenn, Martin and Adams all available I wonder if this pick could have been used to address those needs considering last years starting TE will not be ready by seasons open. And the O line did struggle at times last year, especially with Baas at center.

So was Wilson the right pick? Time will tell, we all hope so and will all be watching.

In interviews at the combine, Burfict admitted to smoking marijuana in the past and when questioned in an interview on 4/25 he stated he does not smoke anymore.

Before the Combine, many experts picked Burfict to be drafted in the first round and now there is the possibility that he won’t be drafted at all. Teams began to question Burfict’s value when he had a poor performance at the Combine. Scout.com states:

“He ran a sluggish 40-yard dash at the combine in February, a high 4.9 to 5.09 clocking that he improved to 4.79 to 4.85 seconds at his campus Pro Day workout this spring.

And Burfict reportedly struggled during interviews at the combine, something he says he wished he had handled better during a generally overwhelming experience.

Burfict emphasized that he has turned things around since the combine and is eager to prove himself on and off the field.

Burfict said he’s down to 243 pounds after playing at roughly 260 pounds last season.”

This is the most important time in Burfict’s life. It is reported that he’s displayed a new work ethic since the Combine and is determined to become a valuable contributor to an NFL team.

It has also been reported that Ohio State tackle Mike Adams and Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley have failed drug tests.

Some teams frown upon this type of issue while others are not so concerned. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the NFL Draft today.

Let’s get the Redskins out of the way. They might as well have done what the Colts did this week by announcing that Andrew Luck would be their pick. So just say RG3 is your pick. There have been rumblings that the Eagles are trying to move up to the lower half of the top 10 of the draft. The Eagles first round needs are DT or Safety. Most projections state the hands down best Safety in this draft, Mark Baron SS (Alabama) who should go in the 15th or 16th spot, 16th spot belongs to the Eagles and the 15th to the Cowboys. So the Eagles moving up that high to get Barron makes no sense, they could make a move to the 13th or 14th spot without giving up as much to move up to the top 10.

This tells me the Eagles are in love with Fletcher Cox, DT out of Mississippi State who is a Top 10 projection. Worst case scenario for the Eagles is they stay at 16th loose Barron (to Cowboys) and Cox and draft Michael Brockers, DT out of LSU which really is not that bad of a choice. Now if the Cowboys do not get Barron (whether he is drafted higher or the Eagles make a move for him) well they have a lot of other needs on Defense with emphasis on the D-line. Courtney Upshaw, DE out of Alabama may still be available. So could Nick Perry, DE out of USC or South Carolina’s OLB Melvin Ingram who can cause some chaos in Rob Ryan’s blitz happy scheme.

Now the Giants, holding the last pick and a team that sticks to the philosophy of best available player. Okay I am going to get opinionated here; to all those Coby Fleener TE from Stanford supporters, not happening. The Giants signed Martellus Bennett, Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin saw something in this TE that made them believers (maybe to a degree). That being said I can see the Giants drafting a TE like Ladarius Green from Louisiana-Lafayette, Deangelo Peterson, TE, LSU or Michael Egnew, TE, Missouri in Rounds 3 or 4. As for the OT Mike Adams (Ohio State) believers, not happening either. The G-Men have not drafted a OT since 1999 and are staunch believers they can find a good OL in the later rounds and develop him within the organization. Now add to this the rumors of Adams being a “work hard when he feels like it guy”. Does that sound like someone Coughlin would put up with?

So who should it be? The Mel Kipers and Todd McShays of the Draft World will never be able to predict how a draft will go and who will move up or down. Now if Kendall Wright, WR from Baylor happens to move down to 32 grab him. He will open the Giants Offense even more and make Cruz and Nicks look that much better. Now I have been a supporter of RB Doug Martin (Boise State) he is a good runner between the lines and is great in pass protection, receiving and YAC (yards after catch). But we don’t know who will be there at 32, we don’t have that crystal ball. One thing we do know if there is a highly rated DE at 32, well enough said.

Since there were zero negative comments on last week’s first installment of ‘This Week In Mock Drafts’ here at GMEN HQ that must mean that absolutely nobody hated the column… at least not enough to complain about it. Know what that means? Means you’re in for another ‘This Week In Mock Drafts’ article.

Last week’s inaugural New York football Giants related look at mock drafts focused on Chad Reuter of NFLDraftScout.com and CBSSports.com and his thoughts about the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft. Yes, it’s only June. Yes, it’s still 2011. No, the NCAA college football season hasn’t started yet. And, yes, the NFL players are still locked out. But there are still 2012 mock drafts out there to report on and I’ll be doing just that until there are no more.

2012 NFL mock drafts are a crazy thing to be talking about this early. We know that. College hasn’t started yet. Top prospects haven’t lived up to their draft statuses yet, breakout players haven’t broken out yet, there aren’t any major injuries that have occurred as of yet, etc. We know that Jim Tressel resigned and won’t be coaching at Ohio State next season, sorry, he won’t be coaching at THE Ohio State, but that’s about all we know when it comes to NCAA football, at least as of now.

The other thing we know is that all these mock drafts that are being released so early will probably be meaningless by the time the actual draft takes place, in whatever shape or form it takes place. That doesn’t make the process of mock drafts any less fun though.

This week’s man on the chopping block is Andrew Perloff of Sports Illustrated and his 2012 NFL mock draft that he wrote up for SI.com on May 4.
