After months of waiting, Giants football finally returned on Sunday as the Giants took on the Redskins on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

– Joe Montana..errr I mean Rex Grossman completely picked apart the Giants defense. Besides a few impressive plays by the defensive line and some nice grabs by Hakeem Nicks, both sides of the ball looked obsolete. Lets hope this doesn’t become a trend.

– The Good: Hakeem Nicks (did injure his hand, but does not look that serious), David Baas, Jason Pierre-Paul, Chris Canty and Jake Ballard.

– The O.K.: Ahmad Bradshaw

– The Bad: The Defensive backs, Kareem Mckenzie, Eli Manning, Brandon Jacobs, Kevin Gilbride’s play calling, Greg Jones, Hixon’s returns.

Obviously it is only Week 1, but a loss to the Skins’ in this fashion is never pretty to see. Do I think they will improve? – Yes. Tuck and Osi add another dimension to the team, and a veteran MLB will be almost definitely be added this week. Lets not forget, the Giants started the 2007 Superbowl campaign 0-2 and looked destined for failure. Its all a wait and see approach for now.

The Preseason is finally over and it was capped by a meaningless game in which the Giants beat the Patriots 18-17.

– Clint Sintim was lost for the season with a ruptured patella tendon. He will be put on the IR today.

– Da’Rel Scott pretty much locked himself up a roster spot after scoring a 65 yard touchdown off of a fake punt. He has shown flashes of breakaway speed during the preseason that the coaching staff must be excited about.

– Jerrel Jernigan bobbled two punts again, but also added a few pretty catches and a 2 point conversion. He left the game late in the 4th with an apparent wrist injury, that did not seem to be serious.

– Rhys Lloyd went 1 for 3 with fieldgoals albeit they were from more than 45 yards out.

– The Giants have until 4pm today to trim their roster from 85 to 80. Should be interesting to see who the other 4 are along with Dillard going to the IR.

Good Morning folks. Just a quick reminder there will be no Giants Coffee until August 29th because I am taking my talents to South Beach for a little rest and relaxation. But as always I will be tweeting all Giants and NFL news on my twitter page http://twitter.com/erobertsny , so if you miss me I would go ahead and follow me on there. Here’s your news and tidbits for this rainy day:

– There was a huge backlash with Eli Manning saying he is a Top 5-10 quarterback and right up there with the Tom Brady. Obviously, the New York media is starving for a story because what else would you expect the man to say. “Nope, I see myself more in the class of Charlie Whitehurst and Rex Grossman.” Come on now people. And now for my own little rant, Michael Kay should not host a radio show — he is awful. The combination of him and Don La Greca (even though he is a Giants fan) make for the worst, most uninformed, and biased sports talk in New York. Kay talks more about his wife Jodie Applegate then he does sports. We get it Kay, she’s hot and your far from it, but enough already.

– Allegations regarding the University of Miami and booster Nevin Shapiro emerged in the afternoon yesterday during Giants practice. Antrell Rolle and Kenny Phillips were both member of UM, and Rolle specifically was targeted by the media. He neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, but did say that Shapiro was just angry and bitter towards the University, and doing anything he could to bring it down.

– Travis Beckum got reamed out by Kevin Gilbride during practice, and at one point was just told to stand on the sidelines. Not a good day for a man who is fighting for a starting job. Bear Pascoe looks to be the front runner for the starting tight end position.

– WFAN and Mike Francesa (another one who I could rant about all day), had a couple Giants on the air yesterday. Recaps of the interviews are down below by my fellow staff members at gmenhq.com

– Kevin Boss and the Giants supposedly had a verbal agreement, but Al Davis swooped in with an offer that could not be refused. It was also confirmed that Smith was indeed offered a contract that would make him one of the highest paid WR’s in the game prior to his injury.

– Justin Tuck has been bothered by a sore achilles, but do not go into a state of panic. It does not appear to be very serious.

Like I said above I will be in Florida for the next week, so for an update on news, notes, and analysis follow me on Twitter:

– Deon Grant officially resigned with the Giants yesterday. He got back his normal #34. He is looking forward to bringing it to the Eagles this season.

– Sam Giguere has been waived. His groin injury proved to be a quite serious one.

– Beatty has looked solid in practice against Osi. Says he is happy to have him back to challenge him.

– Giants signed kicker Rhys Lloyd to take over for the ailing Larry Tynes. Rhys has a booming kick that could help with Giants special teams.

– Eli Manning said he believes he is an Elite quarterback and right up there with Tom Brady. This may be the make or break season to prove that.

– JPP and Boley’s backs have been acting up. If anything they would just miss the Bears game. Staff trying to be cautious with both.

Another slow day in Giants World, regardless of a few training camp notes and of course the return of Osi.

- Osi’s return to practice was what some may call bittersweet. Reports are that he still hopes to get traded, and is very upset with the Giants defensive line rotation with himself, Tuck and JPP. And the saga continues…

- Giants take the practice field to get prepared for their Week 2 preseason game against the Bears on Monday Night. Primetime Baby! Keep an eye out for the weather report, because if it keeps raining the practice would be moved inside and closed to the public

- Tight End Jake Ballard is impressing in camp, while Beckum returned yesterday after missing two practices in a row. Should be interesting to see who wins out the starting job.

Some news and tidbits from a relatively slow day in Giants world:

– Jerry Reese spoke to the media yesterday. In a nutshell he said: Giants will “definitely” make the playoffs, David Baas is a pro-bowl caliber center, Kevin Boothe signing was a priority, They offered reasonable contracts to Boss and Smith, and they have been following the plan all along. Handled it with class, as usual.

– Travis Beckum sat out a 2nd straight practice. I think its time to check out John Carlson’s availability in Seattle.

– Cotchery signed with the Steelers – Most likely meaning Giants will stick with their own wide-outs.

– Osi has been officially cleared to practice on Monday.

– Saturday night, August 13th, Giants at Panthers Preseason Game 1. In the words of Bart Scott, “Cant Wait!”

– Giants are off from training camp today as they are en-route to Carolina

– I could come up with something clever or unique to start up this column, but I wont. Steve Smith signed with the Eagles. 1 year 4 million, 2 million guaranteed. Smith will now be known as Benedict Arnold to Giants fans, and the Eagles dream team just got the best slot receiver in the game.

– Smiths number 12 has been given to rookie Jerrell Jernigan.

– Giants are having discussions with both T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Jerricho Cotchery

– Osi is getting checked out in Atlanta today — if cleared he will practice on Monday. His agent said there will be no stunts or acts, Osi will be back with the Giants if he can practice. Looks like this soap opera will be cancelled, was looking forward to seeing it on CBS.

– Giants will hold practice today at 1:30 pm. Sun is shining, birds are chirping, and you know quotes will be flying about the departure of Steve Smith.
