If you’ve been following my ‘This Week In Mock Drafts’ feature here at GMEN HQ you probably noticed a trend amongst those mocking players to the Giants in next year’s draft. And that trend would be the selection of linebackers. So far there have been four different linebackers selected by mock draft prognosticators for the Giants. It’s safe to say that linebacker is a need position for the Giants and they probably can’t wait until the 2012 NFL Draft to pick up a new linebacker.

Luckily with the lockout potentially ending soon free agency will finally be allowed to get underway and if that happens the Giants can start addressing their linebacking situation. The first question they’ll have to ask themselves is whether or not to bring Keith Bulluck back? The aging veteran would be a nice keep in the locker room because of his leadership and motivational speaking skills but he’s on the downside of career. Unless he’s willing to stay for cheap he’ll probably try and find somewhere else to play, especially if he still wants to start.

When it comes to free agency and the Giants they usually tend to keep their wallet relatively closed. Unlike the Redskins or Cowboys of years past, unless the Giants needed certain positions to be filled and big name players fit the scheme the Giants would remain quiet. There have been a few exceptions to that rule: Plaxico Burress, Antonio Pierce, Kareem McKenzie, and Chris Canty, to name a few; some were hits, some were misses. But if GM Jerry Reese believes a player would do great things as a Giant he will go after him.

What do you get when you cross an Eagle with a Jackass? Why, DeSean Jackson, of course. Andy Reid will more than likely be bald after the offseason and lockout come to a close. Having to sit back and listen to the inordinately immature remarks that continue to emanate from his juvenile players can only leave him pulling every single strand of hair out of his head. The latest bird to tweet his feathers off is none other than DeSean Jackson.

With Jackson, it really isn’t a matter of if he will flap his gums. It is a matter of when. DeSean has been quite taken with himself since last season and has been quite vocal about it. Alas, like many Eagles, he just doesn’t know when to keep his beak shut.

Just in case you haven’t heard, the NFL is currently closed for business and doing battle with the guys who fill the stadiums aka football players. This shutdown is threatening the livelihoods of countless individuals who work for the teams, stadiums and surrounding areas that host football games. These people have no stake in the 9 billon dollar split that the owners and players are currently trying to bisect. They are just trying to put food on their tables; make their car and mortgage payments.

There have been some rather vocal activists on both sides of the CBA issue. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have championed the cause of the players. John Mara, owner of the New York Giants, has been one of the workhorses working to bridge the gap between the two parties in order to salvage a season headed for disaster. Steve Tisch, VP and co-owner of the New York Giants…not so much.

Giants fans will long remember the days of “Earth, Wind and Fire” aka Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward. Those days, of course, did not last very long. Twin seasons to be exact. But the formula that was stumbled onto, or revisited as the case may be, was not lost on the powers that be.

The game of football is changing right before our very eyes. A quarterback is required to do much more than throw the perfect pass nowadays. He must also be a tall, solid athlete who can take a hit. He must be able to change the play at will, scramble and channel his inner running back when need be. He must be able to see what happens down field before it happens and throw the ball into traffic with pinpoint accuracy. This is the new paradigm for quarterbacks in the NFL. Are things business as usual where the running game is concerned?
