I’m listening to 610 WIP right now (Philly Sports Talk Radio, if you didn’t know) and I can’t beleieve the questions that were asked Andy Reid in his noon presser today.

You think Tom Coughlin gets a beating in press conferences when the Giants lose? Think Kevin Gilbride gets killed for his play calling? SHEESH! That’s nothing compared to what the Eagles head coach just went through. The press is basically calling for the defensive coordinators head this morning… how could this be? How could the “Dream Team” and already anointed 2011 Superbowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles go through such an early season collapse like this?

Look, I went over it all right here:

Clipped from: gmenhq.com (share this clip)

…the Eagles were overhyped, they are overrated, and just because they have a ton of talent it means NOTHING.

ANY Yankees fan like myself will tell you that just because you have the most talent on your team it doesn;t guarantee anything. ANY Cowboys fan will tell you that talent does not equal playoffs in the NFL. ANY Miami Heat fan will tell you that big sexy moves don’t buy championships. ANY New England Patriot fan will tell you that even if you’ve proven yourself 18 out of 19 times, you’re only as good as your last loss.

Now, a lot of these signings to the Eagles defense were over blown to begin with — I said all along Nnamdi seemed like a decent player on a bad team in Oakland… now the Eagles are finding out just how overrated HE is.

The defense has lost its identity since Jim Johnson died and Brian Dawkins left in 2009, they haven’t been the same since. Basically — the Eagles are going to be a paper defense until they get something figured out on how to grow a backbone in the red zone. Say what you want about the play call and execution on the worst goal line run perhaps EVER attempted by Ronnie Brown yesterday, but if you can’t stop the 49ers from cramming it down your throat when it matters most you need to start your evaluations there.

Michael Vick got a brand new $100 million deal over 6 years, and as controversial as that may be for some people, it’s not going directly to the bank.

via Philly.com:

Under the terms of his agreement with creditors, Vick must dedicate a share of his earnings to paying back those to whom he owes money. The percentage he pays increases with his income, according to court documents. Ten percent of his first $750,000 in annual earnings goes to creditors, for example, with the share increasing to 40 percent of any money earned over and above $10 million.

Vick is due between $16 and $20million this year depending on what happens during his 2011 season, and that means the 40% clause will come into play immediately. His creditors are certainly happy about that.

And with this new $100 million contract, that’s not to say Vick is going to be undergoing any significant lifestyle changes. His bankruptcy laden prison term is still going to be affecting him for years to come:

Vick owed roughly $20 million when he filed for bankruptcy. Through the end of June, he had set aside about $2.1 million for the trust collecting money on behalf of his creditors, according to court documents. As part of his bankruptcy plan, Vick is restricted to a budget that limits him to about $300,000 of personal-living expenses. The budget is scheduled to be in place through 2015. But at the end of October, Vick can ask the court to remove the restrictions. After paying taxes and his creditors, and setting money aside for his budgeted spending, Vick has been putting his remaining income into savings he can access later.

Vick said of the contract:

“A lot of things happened in my life. Whether things were done right or wrong, it doesn’t matter anymore. I have an opportunity to move on with my life, and that’s all I prayed for, and that opportunity has come.”

It’s a good thing Vick has the pieces in place to do whats best for him going forward. Saving money, laying low, and paying his debts. It really is an amazing story, however controversial, and he’ll continue to have the spotlight on him with every move he makes.

The truth is I started this post a long time ago, shortly after the Eagles signed Nnamdi Asomugha. The reason? I’m secretly hoping he turns out to be an overrated player who looked like a diamond in the rough on a bad overall Oakland Raiders team. But the truth is he may end up being just another tin can on a trash heap now that he’s in Philadelphia surrounded by more overpriced talent, with bitter rivals of the NFC East looking to tear that team a new one. And with the Eagles looking to revive a fallen defense ever since the passing of Jim Johnson and the departure of Brian Dawkins to Denver… the pressure is going to be on the Eagle secondary now more than ever. If last night was any indication – the much hyped and revamped Eagles defense has a long way to go before they’re ready for prime time.

My opinionated, long overdue rant about why the Eagles aren’t that good is after the jump.
