The day after the current Super Bowl Champions received their rings at Tiffanys in New York City, the news came out that Lawrence Taylor had put one of his up for auction. The 1990 ring is the one up for sale. I would guess that the ’86 ring means a lot more to Taylor and will always remain in his possession.

Neither the auction website nor the release makes any mention about Taylor’s motives for selling. Mike Senyo, a spokesman for SCP Auctions, said in an e-mail that the linebacker is “just ready to sell.”

The first reported bid was around $37,000, and the estimate of the selling price is set at $100,000. We all know of Taylor’s indiscretions off the field and his never to be matched talent on the field. It is very sad that such a great athlete needs to art with some of his past to pay for his mistakes. Hopefully some younger athletes can learn from his mistakes, but I doubt it will help many at all.

Now, it has been put out there that L.T. gave the ring to his son, and he is the one who has decided to sell. A very sad commentary on how Taylor’s family views him and how the younger Taylor might be heading to lead his own adult life. I choose to wish them all well, and remember L.T. for all the great memories he gave me and all Giants fans while attending games in the 80′s. He was spectacular to watch.
