In Super Bowl XLII, Burress caught a game-winning touchdown to help the Giants beat the Patriots.

Plaxico Burress found himself in trouble win when he shot himself in the leg while at a nightclub on Novemver 29, 2008. He was sentenced to two years in prison for violating gun laws in New York in September 2009 . Burress pleaded guilty to a lesser firarms charge.

After being released three months early for good behavior, he signed with the Jets for the 2011 season. He scored eight touchdowns, 612 yards and 45 receptions. He tied the team high for TDs and receptions.

Recently there were rumors circulating that Burress would be signing with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys organization denies any internal conversations about bringing Burress to Dallas.

Apparently Madonna is going to be singing/dancing/performing at the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show this coming January.

Via AOL Sporting News:

Madonna — who will get the nod to sing and dance in ’12 at halftime of Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium. The Material Girl will be the follow up to Fergie, who performed as part of the Black Eyed Peas in Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

First of all… Material Girl? Can you refer to Madonna as the Material Girl 30 years later and still get away with it? Not so much.

Second of all… just like this hilarious/brilliant SNL skit below, BEP is not just made up of Fergie and Will.I.Am.

Fergie of all people should not be singled out from the Black Eyed Peas like she is their lead in any way shape or form. In all honestly — BEP has gone downhill since she came abord the group, and they’ve COMPLETELY sold out as a hip hop group. I remember driving 15 minutes from my house in upstate NY and seeing them open for Mos Def and Talib Kweli at a FREE show — where the 3 original members of the Peas freestyled for about a half hour. It was sick… they were awesome, and they didn’t need some out-produced, boiled down garbage beat behind with some sex appeal to sell an album. That was after their first album came out and I bought one of the only 2 copies the local record store had, long before Fergie came on and completely watered things down. Of course, now they’re one of the highest paid, most popular groups in the country and everyone knows who they are, so…. they’ve got that going for them.

Anyway – back to the Madonna thing.

To me this is barely different than bringing in Tom Petty, the Rolling Stones, or any of the other ancient and washed up acts they’ve safely brought in over the past 7 years to do the halftime show. It’s not 1991 anymore, and the move by the NFL is still rooted deeply in the mindset of quietly but blatantly doing away with the wardrobe malfunction perception the halftime show sustained after Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson took the halftime stage in 2004. Give Prince credit for pushing the envelope with his guitar playing antics behind the silhouette screen.

There is nothing I will look forward to about this halftime show, there was a time and place for a Madonna halftime show long ago. The window has long been closed, and so has my open mind when it comes to booking the safest gig in town — the NFL halftime show. If they really wanted to do something spectacular and current, the Madonna-esque antics of Lady Gaga would have been somewhere to start.

While it seems like it was forever ago (Giants fans have since been dealing with rapid fire Plaxico incident, otherwise referred to as the “shot through the thigh heard round the world,” in addition to the rapid decline of a once stout defensive unit), the G-men are a mere two years removed from the spoils of hoisting the Lombardi trophy.

Clearly, since shocking the world by defeating the previously undefeated (16-0) New England Patriots, we have suffered through Giant letdowns in 2009 and 2010. Tom Coughlin, seemingly re-energized and validated after the Giant Super Bowl run, is back on the hot seat as we enter the 2010 off-season. Jerry Reese is no longer a candidate for sainthood (after the free agent shopping spree in 2009 failed to deliver any results on the football field). In fairness to Reese, Michael Boley and Chris Canty had no previous injury history when the ink dried on their respective mega-deals (Canty received a signing bonus of $17 million or so while Boley pocketed a cool $11 million for his signing bonus). But Reese does deserve a Giant lashing for the Rocky Bernard signing (is it too late to ask Rocky to pay back his signing bonus on the basis of fraud?).

What do the Colts and Saints have in common? Offenses that utilize all of their weapons and defenses that are more opportunistic than dominant. I am not saying that the G-men forgo efforts at fortifying the depth and star power on defense (there is an obvious need for an impact defensive tackle, a new middle linebacker, and a play-making safety). The league has moved towards a more offensive dominated approach (and playing in a division with big play threats (see DeSean Jackson and Miles Austin) dictates that the defense must improve, especially against the pass.

Hence, in our initial mock draft, I have the G-men snatching big Dan Williams at defensive tackle (and I am also very intrigued by DT Brian Price out of UCLA). But, I would not be surprised to see the Giants add a multi-dimensional threat in the first round like C.J. Spiller of Clemson or Dexter McCluster of Ole Miss in Round 2. While the Giants boast a young receiving core that has the potential to be among the best in the NFL (Smith/Nicks/Manningham), adding a home-run threat out of the backfield and on special teams can only help take the pressure off of Eli and back on to opposing defenses. Not to be a downer, but the Giants also face legitimate questions on the offensive line, where Chris Snee is the only starter under the thirty years of age, but we will address the Giants offensive line on another morning. Stay well Giants fans!
