I want everyone to take a moment and think where we would be if we did not have twitter. Athletes take to twitter for many great causes but it seems that twitter has now become the home to trash talking between professional athletes. Keep your eye on Gmenhq.com or twitter.com/gmenhq or twitter.com/tom_brant for your latest Giants trash talking news.

The Super Bowl has come and gone with a New York Giants win and a victory parade that took the city of New York by storm.

Even though the main celebrations are done, it does not necessarily mean that the party has to stop there.

Before the invention of Twitter or blogs, fans got their player scoop from newspapers or the television. Now if you simply log on to your Twitter account, you can live the experience with the players through their own photos and comments.

The Giants were one of the most active teams on Twitter for this past year. The rookies such as Mark Herzlich (@MarkHerzlich), Tyler Sash (@TSash), Spencer Paysinger (@SpittyP), Prince Amukamara (@PrinceAmukamara) and Henry Hynoski (@HenryHynoski) provided comic relief throughout the season by cracking jokes on each other and tweeting about the rookie life.

Veterans such as Justin Tuck (@JustinTuckNYG91), Chris Canty (@ChrisCanty99), Bear Pascoe (@BearPascoe), Jake Ballard (@NYG_J_Ballard85), 2nd year standouts Jason Pierre-Paul (@DatBoyJPP) and Victor Cruz (@TeamVic) provided insightful quotes and assurance when the season was beginning to look bleak.

But, the Twitter MVP of the season would go to the eccentric punter of the New York Giants, Steve Weatherford (@Weatherford5). Weatherford made use of the hashtag revolution that has taken over Twitter by making up (#WeatherfordWednesday) that would “trend” in New York every Wednesday. He also snapped pictures of unsuspecting teammates on the team bus or plane and posted them for the twitter world to see. His most famous target was Super Bowl MVP, Eli Manning.

These players also took the time to respond to fans tweets every day. When the mantra “All In” became the slogan for the Giants playoff run, the players and fans alike used it as a Twitter battle cry before each game (#ALLin).

Tweets, hashtags, and trending may seem like nonsense to a non-twitter user, but it is how the Twitter community interacts with each other. Mark Herzlich posted a video on the plane home from Indianapolis of teammate Andre Brown singing “I Got A Ring”; the video became viral in minutes thanks to Twitter, YouTube, and Blogs.

Digital media is here to stay and for those pushing it aside you are surely missing out. You get a feel of how an athlete truly is and get exclusive content available at your fingertips. It is nothing short of a miracle for sports fans.

To all the Giants fans basking in the championship sunlight, be grateful that this wonderful technology is available for all of us throughout these next few months. The wait until the draft will not seem as bad with it.

With all this talk on Twitter, you can follow me as well for news, updates, and analysis (@ERobertsNY):

It was a glorious day to be a New York Giants fan yesterday and the morning after is just as sweet. The energy around town is electric. All of the New York Metro area, sorry Buffalo, is flying high, with good reason. Jets fans are happy with the outcome of their game, 27-11. The New York Giants are more than just a little bit happy. They are downright ecstatic!

Giants fans could not contain their excitement. So, they took to the internet, Twitter in this case, to share their Big Blue pride. The virtual sea of Tweets from Giants fans were countless. Reading the Tweets from my followers was both side-splitting hilarious and jam packed full of emotion. Needless to say, I thought I would share a small collection of them with our readership who are not up on the whole “Tweeting thing.” Read on to experience the virtual Big Blue love.

As part of GMEN HQ’s continued determination to provide you the best GIANTS feedback and coverage from all over the United States, I recently sought the feedback from Lindsay. Lindsay is a sophomore at Eastern Carolina University and a huge GIANTS fan. ECU has a very large GIANTS following on their campus in Greenville, NC. Below is a recap of our twitter conversation:

Question 1: With Victor Cruz’s stand out game against the Eagles, what do you see his future role becoming? Lindsay: Victor Cruz proved to Eli Manning and the rest of the Giants that he can be trusted and a valuable receiver. I think he can honestly be a star receiver and I plan on buying his jersey next!

Question 2: Which players on the GIANTS need to step up this week to make sure they do not have a let down? Lindsay: I think Corey Webster needs to step up and Aaron Ross needs to play like he did last week in order to shut Fitzgerald down.

Question 3: Which player(s) on the Cardinals scare you the most? Lindsay: Fitzgerald!

Question 4: Do GIANTS fans watch the games together on campus? Lindsay: Yeah Giants fans get together to watch the game or just a bunch of diehard NFL fans that aren’t NFC rivals of course! haha

Question 5: Which NFL team do most students root for: Lindsay: I would say that most people at ECU were raised Panthers fans, but a lot of them have lost hope and changed teams over the years.

Do you want to be the twitter GIANTS fan featured on Gmenhq? Follow me on twitter at twitter.com/tom_brant and let me know!

Okay time for me to rant for a little bit. For those of you lucky enough to hear, Justin Tuck joined Mike Francesa from WFAN for his weekly afternoon spot at a little after 4:30 pm EST. Click here to listen to that wonderful interview. During his spot with Tuck, Francesa brought up the twitter incident between Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck (below is how it ended between the two–seems bad doesn’t it?) :

@michaelstrahanMichael Strahan

If they only knew. Lol RT<s>@</s>JustinTuckNYG91: If you don’t know. The back n forth between me n <s>@</s>michaelstrahan is ALL LOVE. No beef whatsoever

25 Sep via UberSocial for BlackBerry

Francesa kept digging for dirt and asking those “deep” questions we all know he asks. After listening to the interview the first time it sounded like Francesa was trying to make it a big deal. After listening to it for a second and third time, it was clear: Francesa was trying to make it a big deal. He called Strahan a “jerk” who should “shut up” and that “won’t be going out to dinner” anytime soon.

I think we all know there is no love lost between Francesa and Strahan. However, when will Francesa realize that Strahan is still a GIANTS legend that is generally regard in positive terms by the fans? On the fox pre and post-game shows Strahan even announced to the national audience that he “bleeds GIANTS blue” and is “Giants homer, I played there for 15 years.”

Mike take a clue from Tuck (who wanted nothing to do with the twitter conversation) and just take the “high road.” Do you really think that GIANTS fans care about what Strahan and Tuck said on twitter (by the way they talked and are considered good friends)? Or do you think GIANTS fans care more about win and what it was like out there? Mike take a clue from your audience. However, as we know Francesa can talk about whatever he wants for six hours as it nicely detailed here. Guess adding abilities are not required to be a daytime talk host.

Do I have this all wrong? Is Francesa the voice of the fan and the GIANTS fan? I make mistakes, but I think I speak for the masses when i say I really do not care about some twitter event, I care about the game MIKE! Focus on that more! Yes, I’m bias towards Strahan (as one of my favorite GIANTS of all-time) but really Mike?? Is this what you get paid for? To ask those deep questions that have NOTHING to do with ANYTHING?

The phenomonen of Twitter has taken the world by storm. The wave of communication has gone from newspapers and magazines, to a simple “tweet” by a reporter. Social media has revolutionized the way our information is gathered and transmitted.

Schefter (@AdamSchefter) and Mort (@MortReport) now deliver breaking news the minute they receive it, Matthew Berry (@MatthewBerryTMR) can give fantasy advice without writing an article or making a television appearance, and even the Professor- John Clayton (@ClaytonESPN) has succumbed to Twitter to deliver his insight. It is truly an ever changing world.

With Twitter also comes athletes thoughts on trending topics. Thoughts on politics, the stock market, pop culture, etc. But for one athlete in particular, his thoughts are mainly geared towards the thing he says he loves the most– Sports right? Nope. Food!

Yep, that’s right, food. And that man is Ex- Giants and Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews (@ImShawnAndrews). Shawn Andrews is currently a free agent in the NFL, but that doesn’t seem to bother him much. You can take a gander at his Twitter page, and most definitely find an intriguing thought that combines food and life on the road. Whether he is in New York, New Jersey, or his hometown of Arkansas, he is sure to have a riveting 140 character or less thought about the city or state he is in and the grub that surrounds the area.

Andrews puts Food Network to shame with his extensive knowledge on local restaurants/food chains, and can you tell you exactly what to order through just a simple tweet.

His fan interaction is unlike any other athlete. If you tweet Shawn you will most likely get a response such as, “Respekt” or even just a “LOL”, but the fact that he takes time out to respond to each fan is remarkable. For instance yesterday afternoon, I suggested he go to Five Guys Burgers and Fries for lunch. We exchanged a few tweets on how good Five Guys was when I told him I forgot my wallet and could not even get lunch. What do you think the big fella said?

Yep that is just the type of guy Big Shawn is. So if your in the mood for something good to eat and need a suggestion or just want a dose of comedy in your life, then look no further than Shawn Andrews twitter page. You can thank me later.

As one lockout slowly comes to an end, another one begins. The NBA owners will lock out their players tonight while they try to figure out a better system to operate under. The NBA, unlike the NFL, has as many as 22 teams losing money on an annual basis. The agreed upon number is that their are at least 12 teams operating in the red. Of course the NBA is a completely different animal from the NFL. The NBA is a star league driven by star players. Cities and therefore franchises are only successful if they can develop or acquire big name college or established players. The New York Knicks are a perfect example of a team that had lost attendance, and had become irrelevant in the league. They had no star players since Patrick Ewing left, and had disappeared from the landscape of New York and National sports. Once they were able to invest in Amare Stoudamire, and Carmelo Anthony, they were the talk of the NBA. They of course were a .500 team with both those players on the roster, and were swept in the first round of the playoffs, but they had star players and were again a topic of conversation. The NBA is not being sued by their players. This is a true lockout of the players and a complete shutdown of the league much like the NHL experienced a few years back. The NBA also has many owners that own NHL franchises, and they know first-hand the benefits they achieved by changing the way they pay players, and what they achieved by shutting down the league for a full season. The NBA and NBAPA are said to be so far apart that no deal will come quickly. The most optimistic diagnosis is the league may start up again sometime in February and play a 50 game season. The NBA will suffer from fans already sick of labor talk from the NFL. They will also suffer from the fact that November-January is prime NFL season, and no one will care what they are doing until February. The sense of urgency just won’t exist from the fans. The media will cover it sparingly as the NFL season chugs along. The NBA has real problems and this is a chance to make the changes it needs, and that won’t be a simple, or quick fix.
The NFL on the other hand is the NFL. The Shield, as the league is known, is bigger than any player. It’s nice to have big stars, but teams and franchises make the NFL successful. A tweet this morning from a former player asked the question if any fans root for owners. Of course we do. We are fans of our team. We adore certain players, but it’s the franchise, and their successes that makes us such loyal fans. This is verified by the amazing success of DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket which allows fans to watch their team no matter where they live. Fans don’t change loyalties in the NFL because free agents leave, coaches get fired, or even if they themselves move away. The League, The Franchises, and The Teams are the stars of the NFL.

Last week the Twitterverse was humming with nonsensical needling. This is, of course, a result of too much idle time on the Philadelphia Eagles’ hands. Perhaps that is not entirely accurate. There always seems to be a slow and steady leak emanating from the gaping hole in the Philadelphia face. Of course, this hole is only wide enough to talk trash when the Eagles have had a moderately successful season. All other times, it is wrapped up tight.

Most of the talk has been coming from the Seans during the offseason. LeSean McCoy is the current culprit. All of the other Philly Seans keep their mouths well greased though – DeSean, BeSean, Fe-Fi-FoSean…all of them. While most professional football players are focusing on working out a deal to end the lockout or getting their bodies into game shape, the Eagles are focusing their sights on the New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora in particular.
