The place kicker, Lawrence Tynes, has won the NFC Special Teams Player of The Week Award. Yes, you read that correctly. Tynes, who has been a sore point with fans for years had a tremendous night last Thursday versus the Carolina Panthers. Tynes was 5 for 5 in field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points with a long of 49 yards. All of Tynes’ kicks were dead down the middle with plenty to spare in distance. I ene commented to my wife while watching the game “Who is this guy and what happened to Lawrence Tynes?”

Tynes came over from the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2007 season after averaging 77% in made field goals with a long of 53 yards and making all but 4 extra points. In 2007, Lawrence bumped up his stats to 85% while making 23 of 27, while missing 2 extra points. Many have thought he would have been replaced, or at least threatened with competition had he not made the final kick in Green Bay to send the Giants to the Super Bowl. Since then he has not been stellar in field goals, averaging just under 82% made, or kickoffs, but once again we heard Bob Papa utter the phrase “Lawrence Tynes has kicked the Giants to the Super Bowl” and we knew Lawrence would be back as the starter.

It looks like the Giants patience has paid off once again. Lawrence Tynes is 10 for 10 with a long of 49 and seems to have developed an arsenal of different kickoffs for all occasions. The season is young, but with the offense struggling slightly in the “Green Zone”, Tynes has been a steady contributor through three games. Maybe his friendship with punter, and holder Steve Weatherford has given him more confidence, whatever it is, it’s working.

Congratulations Lawrence…Keep it up, and maybe Bob Papa will utter that famous phrase a few more times….

The New York Giants had a tremendous need at punter coming into last season. Jeff Feagles had retired and Matt Dodge had been such a lightning rod the previous season that it would make it impossible for him to continue as part of this team. The kicking situation on the Giants had not been a strong point coming in to say the least.

Steve Weatherford could have been named MVP of the Super Bowl without much of a stretch. Steve Weatherford was basically kicked off the Jets, and now has a Super Bowl RIng to show for it. Weatherford was re-signed quickly and his directional punting will continue to be a weapon for the Giants for some time. He is the real deal, and he will make the defensive and offensive units that much better.

“Lawrence Tynes has kicked the Giants to The Super Bowl” has now been uttered twice by the voice of the Giants Bob Papa. Many have thought if Lawrence hadn’t (Finally) made the kick in Green Bay in ’07 that he would be long gone, and now he has made another in San Francisco, and a few more in Indianapolis. There might be some competition in camp, but Tynes gets the nod in a close battle.

Zak DeOssie now has one more ring than Dad. He is a great long snapper and Special teams players. Consistency is the key here.

The return game however is up for grabs. Does Hixon secure a wide receiver spot and forfeit kickoff returns on the process? Do the Giants allow their young running back David Wilson to start out as a punt returner ala Tiki Barber? These are key spots where players like Jerrel Jerrnigan, Andre Brown, Jayron Hosley, and Da’Rel Scott can contribute in different ways to ensure a roster spot. I think this is another great watch for training camp and am looking forward to see who emerges.

I know that this is a late posting, but my computer got hit with a major virus, and this is the first chance that I’ve had to post. I apologize for my tardiness, but I hope that everyone understands.

The good news is that the G-Men won the battle of NY, and made everyone’s Christmas a little merrier, unless you’re a Jets fan. By virtue of the win, the Giants still control their own destiny (they would have anyway, with a win over Dallas this coming week), but the Giants’ emotional state is probably better for it. As is typical of the guys in blue, the game was a microcosm of the season: flashes of brilliance with periods of lackluster performance. More after the jump. From a statistical viewing, the game was somewhat even. The punting game was virtually equal, with each team punting 9 times. The Giants had a 43 yard average, while the Jets averaged 42 yards. Tynes drilled two field goals, while Coach Coughlin iced the Jets kicker, and Mr. Folk missed his one attempt. Offensively, the Giants running attack showed some signs of life in the second half. The rushing totals were ordinary, but after only 6 yards gained in the first half the G-Men came up with a respectable tally for the game. Both Jacobs and Bradshaw literally ran over people. 26 attempts for 115 yards versus 25 attempts and 105 yards for the Jets. About even, although it seemed as if the Jets secondary wanted no part of either of the Giants main backs. (more…)
