Game Time: 1:03 pm EST

Location: FedEx Field, Landover, Maryland

TV: CBS (Will not be carried in the NY/CT Markets)

Announcers: Marv Albert and Rich Gannon

Radio: ESPN 980AM

Game Time Weather:

Kick Off: 54* 60% Chance of Showers

Half-Time: 52* 65% Chance of Showers

4th Quarter: 53* 60% Chance of Showers

GIANTS Playoff Implications: A win by the Redskins will ensure that they stay within one game of the Giants no matter what the Giants do. A loss by the Redskins could allow the Giants to take a commanding two game lead over the ‘Skins in the division. The weather should play a factor in the game, possibly making the field a bit wet and slow. I would expect the Ravens to win but you can never count out RG III.

One way to keep RG3 from beating you is to keep him off the field and that’s basically what the Giants managed to accomplish in the first half. The Giants dominated time of possession in the first half, holding the ball for 20:32 and it played a big role in why they lead the Redskins at halftime 13-10.

The Giants were solid on their opening drive until a false start penalty on RT Sean Locklear stalled it and led to a 39-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes. The kick gave the Giants a 3-0 lead.

The Redskins came right back with the unpredictable RG3 running a triple option that pretty much caught everyone by surprise. However Griffin fumbled before hitting the ground and the ball ended up in the hands of Joshua Morgan who ran it 13 yards to the end zone for a touchdown and gave Washington a 7-3 lead.

That triple option was just another example of the unorthodox offense that the Redskins have run this season with RG3 at quarterback. Griffin had the option to hand off to running back Alfred Morris, however he kept the ball and rolled to the left with Morgan as his wing man. Instead of pitching the ball to Morgan, he kept it himself and appeared to be in the act of sliding when he fumbled the ball. Fortunately for the Redskins, Morgan was in the area and he was alert.

Manning and the Giants would then put together a monster 13-play, 85-yard drive that was capped off with a 4 yard touchdown pass to Martellius Bennett. This put the Giants back on top 10-7. The Redskins would come right back down the field to even the score at 10 on a Kai Forbath 33-yard field goal. However, Manning was able to drive the Giants into position for a Tynes 40-yard field goal to close out the half with a 13-10 lead.

Penalties threatened to kill any momentum the Giants offense was gathering in the first half. The Giants racked up 6 penalties in the first half for 45 yards.

The Giants dominated time of possesion in the first half … The Redskins paid a great deal of attention on wide receivers Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, meanwhile Manning was able to take advantage with tight end Martellius Bennett on big pass plays downfield.

1st Half Notables, Giants

Manning – 14 of 22 187 yards, touchdown

Ahmad Bradshaw, 15 carries, 77 yards

Martellius Bennett – 5 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD

This just in from our friends at “The Jersey Report”

I wanted to reach out with some exciting news ahead of tonight’s MNF showdown between Eli Manning’s division-leading Giants and RG3’s surging Redskins, and – Robert Griffin III has jumped to the top spot in jersey sales across more than 500 DICK’S Sporting Goods stores in the country, based on numbers gathered from the DICK’S Sporting Goods Jersey Report. Not one to take a backseat to any QB, Eli also made a jump this weekend, passing his brother Peyton to stake claim to the #3 spot, trailing only RG3 and Andrew Luck.

Surprising? Unquestionably. Impossible to predict? Not quite. “The Jersey Report”, which is a first-of-its-kind experience – a dynamic ranking system that tracks sales of pro football jerseys across more than 500 DICK’S Sporting Goods locations nationwide, numbers have borne out consistently all season that jersey sales spike in the days leading up to game day, as fans clamor to get the gear of their favorite players for the big event. Updated daily throughout the football season, the Report is the only destination that provides fans with a comprehensive breakdown of how the sales of their favorite players’ jerseys are rising, falling and stacking up against the competition.

With their playoff hopes on the line for Washington, and an opportunity to put a nail in their coffin for New York, tonight’s game might just decide the fate of these two NFC East foes. Not even stellar performances by Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning on Sunday could stem the momentum of these two big-time quarterbacks as they prepare to face off tonight. So who will win? It’s hard to say, but one thing is for sure – fans of both teams will be donning their QB’s jerseys as they get settled in for a pivotal game on one of the biggest stages in sports.

The New York Giants are coming off of a convincing victory on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers and they ‘ll now continue their playoff push against the Washington Redskins next week on Monday night. If the Giants (7-4) have realized anything this season in the NFC east it’s that anything can happen, however a win in Washington would give them much more breathing room going forward as the division leaders.

It wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for the Giants when they hosted the Redskins (5-6) at MetLife Stadium back in week 7. It took a 77-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz as well as a fumble by Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss in the final two minutes of the game to secure a victory for Big Blue.

The Redskins would go on to lose their next two games, however since returning from their bye week have defeated Philadelphia and Dallas respectiviely. Those were two big wins against division opponents and they have helped set the stage for their Monday night rematch with the Giants.

The Giants defense struggled to contain Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III in Week 7 and based on what he’s been doing lately, they are going to be in for another hard-fought battle on Monday night. RGIII is progressing rapidly, the accuracy and poise he’s shown this season combined with his ability to run with the football has made him a human highlight film waiting to happen.

The Redskins have a quarterback who’s put up 8 touchdowns in the last two games. RGIII has a hot hand and he’s playing with confidence that’s growing by the week. The Giants may have kept Green Bay and their superstar quarterback Aaron Rogers in check, however they are facing an entirely different type of monster this week in Griffin and a team that believes they can make a run at the playoffs.

Washington has found a healthy run-pass balance in their offense that’s also benefited Griffin’s progession this season. Albert Morris has been a pleasant surprise at running back for Washington and he gave the Giants absolute fits in their week 7 matchup. (22 carries for 120 yards)

The Giants are gonna have to take away the run game and force RGIII to beat them or make him uncomfortable early and get ahead on the scoreboard before Washington can get into any type of offensive rhythm. Easier said than done.

One look at the remainder of the schedule for the Giants and this is a game they need to have. New Orleans, Atlanta, and Baltimore will each be big-time showdowns on the calendar and if the Giants stumble in Washington it could very well take away what little breathing room they do have in the playoff push.

It wasn’t the dominating effort the Giants put in against the 49ers last week, however Eli Manning and the Giants did just enough to edge out Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins by securing a thrilling 27-23 victory at MetLife Stadium.

After a back and forth first half, both teams seemed to stall on offense in the 3rd quarter. It looked as if the Redskins would pull out the thrilling victory after RG3 connected with Santana Moss on a 30-yard touchdown pass that helped give them a 23-20 lead with less than 2 minutes to play. However Manning was able to pull out another 4th quarter comeback, hitting Victor Cruz for a 77-yard td pass to regain the lead for good. The Giants defense sealed the deal after forcing a Moss fumble to regain possesion of the ball.

This was a big win for the Giants, they were 0-2 in the NFC East coming into today’s game and another division loss could have been disastrous at this stage in the season. This game at halftime had all the makings of being decided in the 4th quarter and that’s exactly how it turned out.

Robert Griffin III continues to show no fear of the spotlight, the Redskins quarterback was electric again today with highlight-worthy moves that almost won the game. The 4th and 10 conversion in the 4th quarter that had him scrambling all over the place was beautiful to watch and would have been the play of the game had the Redskins came away with the win. Fans of Washington are going to be in for a treat watching this youngster continue to develop his game.

Good teams make the necessary halftime adjustments and the Giants found a way to slow down the ground attack of the Redskins which wore down the defensive line in the first half. Redskins running back Alfred Morris was a beast in the first half with relentless runs up and through the middle of the Giants defense. Morris racked up 94 of the Redskins 146 rushing yards in the first half. However the Giants slowed him down in the 3rd quarter and then cranked up their pass rush. The Redskins turned the ball over 4 times today.

Eli Manning saved his best for when it mattered, however overall he was off. Manning missed today on passes he normally connects with Cruz on and the two interceptions he threw today didn’t help the cause either. Nevertheless with 2 minutes to play and the game on the line, Eli Manning is the quarterback you should want on that field and he proved it yet again today.

Notables:

The Giants pass rush came alive in the second half. Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, and Osi Umenyiora all registered sacks today on RG3.

Jayron Hosley was beat on the touchdown pass from RG3 to Moss that looked to be the game-winning play late in the 4th quarter, however he redeemed himself when he recovered the Moss fumble that basically clinched the victory for the Giants.

The Giants needed this game today because of what it means in the division standings for them and they will need next weeks game too in Dallas. The Giants loss their season opener to the Cowboys at home.

It was a back and forth battle for points on the scoreboard in the first half between the Redskins and Giants that led to a 13-13 tie at halftime.

It was a good and entertaining first half between these two teams, a very good one. The Redskins have looked impressive on offense starting with an absolute monster drive that went for 17 plays and took 9:11. However, the Giants goal line defense stepped up as the Redskins were unable to punch it in for a touchdown and settled for 3 points from Kai Forbath. The Giants answered right back with a 80-yard drive that was capped off by Andre Brown’s 1 yard td dive into the end zone. The Redskins countered that with a screen pass that went for 26 yards to 36-year old wide receiver Santana Moss for a touchdown, helping Washinton regain the lead. The Giants were able to tie the game up at 10 with a Lawrence Tynes 27-yard feid goal. However the Redskins wouldn’t back down as RG3 helped get them into position for a 43-yard field goal from Forbath briefly giving Washington the lead. The Giants capped off the 1st half scoring with a surgical-like drive from Eli Manning in the 2-minute offense that led to a 39-yard field goal from Tynes to tie the game at 13.

The Giants defensive line was worn down by the ground attack of the Redskins in the first half. Rookie running back Alfred Morris ran through holes with wreckless abandon for 94 yards on 13 carries. Washington’s mix of hard running from Morris and the elusive moves of quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) has given their offense an added dimemsion that is fun to watch.

Notables:

Tight End Martellus Bennett posted 4 catches for 62 yards in the first half. Bennett only had 5 catches over the last 3 weeks.

Redskins big play tight end Fred Davis went down and then went out with a left achillies injury that looks like it might derail his season. That’s a huge loss for Washington, Davis is the Redskins leading receiver this season.

The Giants are going to have to find a way to slow down the Redskins ground game in the second half. Manning missed on a few passes that he normally converts and he’ll have to make adjustments in the second half. This is a must-win for the Giants, they are 0-2 in the NFC east division this season. This has the makings of a game that could be decided late in the 4th quarter.

After a stellar performance in Week 1, can the Washington Redskins finally be contenders in the NFC East? Not so fast.

Although Robert Griffin III put up another great performance in Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams, sloppy play and key injuries on the defense have given the Redskins a reality check.

Shocking the world in Week 1 by beating the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome was nothing to look down upon, but the Redskins should have put a pounding on the St. Louis Rams in Week 2 to put a cherry on top of their first 2 games.

The Redskins defense wasn’t exactly great in Week 1 either, but RG3’s performance made that a non factor. The defense continued that pattern in Week 2 by giving up 31 points to Sam Bradford and the Rams. The defense has now given up a total of 63 points in the first 2 game of the season. This will not lift the Redskins into playoff contention.

The beaten down defense of the Redskins will also have to survive without two key players on their defense. They will have to go without two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo and defensive end Adam Carriker for the rest of the season. These are two injuries that the Redskins desperately cannot afford. One of their backups will have to step up to make sure this isn’t a major blow to their season.

As for Sam Bradford, he was the better of the two quarterbacks, completing 26 of 35 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns as he rallied the Rams passed the Redskins. All you Fantasy football nuts out there should keep an eye on Bradford with RG3 sure to be swooped up in all fantasy formats.

For the Redskins to be contenders in the NFC East, their defense needs to shape up quickly. Unfortunately for them, RG3 can’t play defense.

For Robert Griffin III, there has been a lot of hype, since being drafted by the Washington Redskins this past April. And with hype, comes questions. And when you’re a rookie QB, in arguably the NFL’s toughest division, there are A LOT of questions.

I don’t know how many questions remain after RGIII’s first NFL game today. Griffin left nothing to be desired after going 19/26 for 320 yds. and two scores (both passing) on his way to winning his first NFL start. He was incredible. He moved around the field like he’s been in the NFL for years. This kid didn’t play like he was a rookie; he played like a guy who has arrived. Just about everyone thought Griffin was going to be special, just not this soon or in this situation. In a league full of knee-jerk reactions, we’ll have to wait and see if he can play like this all year. With the evidence we have right now, the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles better take note.

When you look at the Redskins win, just about everything was stacked up against them. They opened their season at the Superdome, taking on the New Orleans Saints. Yes, the same Saints that were literally, unbeatable at home last year, in fact not just unbeatable, unstoppable. The Saints scored more than two times as many points as their opponents last year at home. Not only that, this marked the first game since “bounty gate” and the first game since all players “involved” were re-instated. Needless to say, the Superdome was a wild environment.

Guess how Washington combated that? Griffin came out and completed his first eight passes. His seventh? That was only a throw across the middle, to newly acquired WR Pierre Garcon for an 88yd TD.

New Orleans was able to chip away at the lead, here and there, but never was able to claim the lead. It felt like they just couldn’t keep up with Washington and their young offense. Griffin wasn’t the only rookie to impress for the ‘Skins. Rookie RB Alfred Morris, a sixth-round racked up 96 yards and punching in two scored.

Keep in mind, Washington’s defense is no slouch, statistically they weren’t great last year, and the Saints were able to move the ball and score, but they’re a younger unit for the most part and added some depth to their secondary. So Griffin may not to be this great week in and week out (although I’m sure everyone in DC hopes he is).

If he can be consistent and protect the ball, the NFC East is going to be much tighter than I think anyone expected, but enough with the knee-jerk, lets wait and see.

I was recently shown a story from my editor and was frankly shocked as to the fortitude of this writer to publish such a story. It was called “Beast of the East” and published in the Dallas Cowboys “THE LANDRY HAT” by a writer identifying himself as flaportejr. First, he was factually inaccurate to such a degree that it was frankly incredulous that someone allowed it to be published. He based his stories on fan opinion, rather than fact, and he showed he had no sense of credibility as a analyist and was clearly just a FAN.

The object of the story was to compare position players of all the NFC East to see who the “Beast of the East” were in the Division by talent level. His conclusion Dallas far outweighed the Redskins but also the Eagles and the Super Bowl Champion Giants. Okay let us go to his first ridiculous statement in which he writes; “I have listed as a tie between Eli Manning and Tony Romo. Although in my opinion Romo is the better QB by far. Romo has a higher QB rating, completion percentage, and more TD’s per game then Manning. In fact without the luck of a David Tyree miracle helmet catch, a Wes Welker 2nd down Super Bowl bobble with 4 minutes left in the game, or a Miles Austin dropped wide open 50 yard game clinching TD pass, it isn’t even a debate.” Okay we all know that statement is just plain stupid but I am not going to respond as a fan, I will respond with what their NFL colleagues have stated. In NFL Networks Top 100 players, Romo was rated 91, Vick 71 and Manning 31. So according to their fellow NFL players Romo is not even close to a tie with Manning and in fact is closer to Vick, the better QB, at 71. Call us all when Romo wins more than one playoff game in 9 years. These statements by itself needs no commentary. Anyone reading it will know how foolish it is or did Romo win 2 Super Bowls and more than one playoff game when I fell in a deep sleep?

Now let us go to this writers erroneous facts. First off I hate comparisons this early in the season when we do not know players health or standing on the team. So first mistake I saw was this writer placing David Diehl as the Giants LT. In fact Diehl is slated as RT. Then this writer, out of god knows where, places Prince Amukamara as the Giants starting CB. Prince might not even be the Giants nickle corner this season. Just for this writers’ edification Terrell Thomas and Corey Webster are the Giants starting CBs. You might remember Webster, the number one Corner for the Giants last year and the starting CB for the Giants the last 3 years. I know I am concentrating on the Giants and ignoring the Eagles and Redskins but this writer should be comparing his Cowboys to the Super Bowl Champs with some type of knowledge. Okay next mistake he places Chase Blackburn as starting MLB for Giants when in fact both Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese have said that is a open position and Michael Boley may start there. There are more factual mistakes concerning the Giants, Eagles and Redskins but I do not have the stomach to get into it and do not want to write a 2 page article.

I will not rate which team has the better players at each position because it is quite frankly stupid. We do not know where these players will be at the end of Training Camp, who the surprises will be and the changes in line ups. I will tell this writer the next time you present an article like this; tell the reader this is written from the heart of a Cowboy fan and not as a analyst. To show you the difference I am a big Giants fan but judging pure talent I think the Eagles easily take that crown but it is about winning which by the way Romo has a lot to learn even this late in his career.

The NFC East has been a tough division lately, with 3 teams in the playoff hunt year after year. , and one team with 2 Lombardi Trophies in 5 years. So, how did they all do in this years draft? I would say very good. With each team addressing needs and getting players that will address those needs immediately.

The Washington Redskins may have made the biggest splash by drafting QB Robert Griffin III. He will make the Skins a better team immediately with the offensive threat he poses. They followed that up with selecting QB Kirk Cousins. Some think a strange pick, but will keep pressure on both QB’s and competition always brings out the best. Two offensive guards in Josh LeRibeus who could become a starter and Adam Gettis who will provide depth. They selected RB Alfred Morris, a quick back able to find creases in the zone run scheme, that will give RG3 another option. LB Keenan Robinson will look to be a nickle backer. The two DB’s Richard Crawford and Jordon Bernstine will provide depth in the secondary and help against their passing oriented division foes. Grade A-.

The Dallas Cowboys went to work on providing help to a defense that was vulnerable to the pass, prone to giving up leads, and was one of the contributing factors leading to their late season collapse. They traded up to pick CB Morris Claiborne, arguably the best DB in this years draft. They continued the defensive trend with OLB/Pass Rusher Kyle Wilber and SS Matt Johnson. Both of whom should help against big plays. They took TE James Hanna late to help an aging Jason Witten and WR , a big physical receiver, Danny Coale that will probably make the team on special teams but could help Romo and the passing attack. Grade B.

The Eagles also were defensive minded early on. DT Fletcher Cox will be able to take up the middle in the wide nine. ILB Mychal Kemdricks and DE Vinny Curry were both players the Eagles couldn’t pass on. Both are athletic players that seem to never quit on a play. Reid got to pick a QB, Nick Foles is a heavy footed QB that Reid probably wants to use to show everyone he can make a good passer out of anyone. CB Brandon Boykin is a little small for CB at 5’9″ but can also play slot receiver. Maybe an Edelmann type player. The two linemen, OT Dennis Kelly and OG Brandon Washington look to be backups but work their way into starters in the future. RB Bryce Brown should fit nicely into Philly’s offense. Grade B.

The Super Bowl Champion NY Giants addressed needs. RB David Wilson and WR Rueben Randle will replace two departures to free agency and will fill in nicely. Jayron Hosley can help with depth and covering the slot receiver. He could also split return duty with Wilson on special teams. TE Adrien Robinson will provide help in what could be the thinnest position the GMen have. If he can step up his game, this pass catching TE could see a lot of snaps. OT’s Brandon Moseley and Matt McCants both have good size and physical attributes but figure to be developmental players and may earn a spot as a back up. Markus Kuhn is undersized for a DT., but has talent and could make it as a backup in one of the many ever changing defensive line rotations. Grade B-.

2012 should once again be a very competitive race for the NFC East Division Champs. But I think Big Blue will rise to that challenge and capture yet another Division title.

The Washington Redskins have released QB John Beck. This should not come as a surprise to anyone for two reasons:

Beck finished last season with 80 completions out of 132 attempts, 858 yards, two passing touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Redskins just drafted two QBs, No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III, and Kirk Cousins from Michigan State.

The Skins are obviously looking for a fresh start and considering all the QB issues they’ve had over the past few seasons I think it is a good idea. Some people are saying that since Cousins won 27 games as a starter for three years at Michigan State that drafting him as the backup QB could be setting the stage for another QB controversy. I get the sense that the Redskins front office, and the fans, are ready to stick with one talented QB, Robert Griffin III, and watch him develop over several years. I would say that RG3 would need to have a really terrible first year to bring on a QB controversy.

It seems every year there is at least one team out of the NFC east that all the “experts” choose as their hot pick to be in the Superbowl. Last year it was the under achieving “dream team” Philadelphia Eagles, and early on this year it doesn’t seem any different. This is an extremely talented team. Just look at the roster. They were in the top ten in ppg, ypg, passing ypg and running ypg. And in the offensive happy NFL, that is impressive.

This year probably wont be any different. Andy Reid is still one of the top 10 coaches in the league, he just needs to adjust a bit more and break from the game plan if the run is working. Their keys to 2012 are, have a positive turnover ratio and keep Vick upright in the pocket. He took a lot of punishment last year. While some of it was due to his running, he seemed to take more hard hits behind the line of scrimmage as opposed to down the field. And if DeSean Jackson can stay focused and Vick can get him the ball enough to keep him happy, combined with Macklin, Celek and the late season emergence of Riley Cooper, look out. McCoy is extremely dangerous out of the backfield both running and catching the ball. And with good defensive ends and a very good secondary all they need is some solid play from their LB’s and their wide 9 defense could be dominating against a pass happy NFL. Barring them believing the press clipping and shooting themselves in the foot again, the Eagles will be in the hunt for the division title.

The defending Superbowl Champion N.Y. Giants will only be better this year and will be in the hunt for the division title with the Eagles. They have the best Coach and QB in the division. Their receiving Duo of Cruz and Nicks is top notch, and could be the best in the league. Even with the loss of Kareem McKenzie they will still have a good offensive line and have already shored it up with the addition of Locklear and they will get their 2011 draft pick James Brewer back.

Their defense is already better with the emergence of JPP and the return of Terrell Thomas. Keith Rivers could be the answer at LB if he can stay healthy and live up to his pre draft potential. The only real question mark is at the RB position. Where will the replacement for Jacobs come from. It will probably be a combination of what they have and possibly someone from the draft. A legit run at the division is well within reach.

Last year at this time all we heard about was Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys. 9 months later all we heard were excuses about why the Cowboys had imploded. Bottom line has been and still is, they are a soft team. Romo is a good QB but seems to fold under the pressure of the big game. They have a good front 7 on defense, but after that it is just a ton of questions. The running game as well as the receiving corp were extremely unpredictable and mostly ineffective. They did have some big plays, but they were inconsistent. The secondary will still be weak and get burned on a regular basis. They still could be a 9-7 team, but with the Giants and Eagles being in double digit wins I believe Dallas will come up short of the playoffs.

The Washington Redskins will be better than they have been in recent years. With the probable drafting of RG3 they will have an immediate improvement on offense. Unfortunately after Santana Moss and Roy Helu on offense and Brian Orakpo on defense, there is not much else to speak of. Shanahan will probably have this team over achieve in the first part of the season, but they will come back to earth again down the road. The Redskins will not be much better than 7-9.

Another incredible run to the Superbowl? Is that what we should expect in 2012? Let’s start with how much things have changed in a year. Eli is now one of the better QB’s in the NFL. Coughlin is secure and will be here until he says otherwise. The coaching staff will be here until they decide to move on. Our defense is much more solid to start the year than they were in 2011. We are in a better position than last year, and a playoff appearance is not out of the question. But I wouldn’t say we are favorites to be in the SB again. We haves holes that need to be addressed. Osi will probably start his yearly B.S. again. I don’t foresee Philly and Dallas starting off badly this year, and Washington should be better. Not to mention, we have a very tough schedule again. But honestly, who cares right now? We are the Superbowl Champions and we can relax a little. Unlike our cross town rivals we don’t have to buy another black curtain. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be great to go out and win it again. But we have nothing to prove. We can all concentrate on watching Big Blue on Sunday and enjoying the games one week at a time. We don’t have to think back 5, 12 or god forbid 43 years to remember what it is like to root for a Super Bowl Champion. Yes, we can all start to think about the draft and look at where we need to improve. We can start to look forward to seeing Cruz and Nicks break some receiving records, and Eli breaking some passing records. Maybe JPP leading the league in sacks, but let’s all just enjoy the fact we had a parade just a few months ago. Let’s continue to bask in the enjoyment of Philly, Dallas, Washington and yes, Gang Green too, not making the playoffs and all having a very disappointing season. So, even though the season is getting close and we can all begin to get excited. Let’s just enjoy last year for a few more months. Let’s all refrain from our usual rants of getting rid of Coughlin, or trade Eli for Rivers, or the play calling is awful, etc. At least until December please. 2012 is the year we can all enjoy ourselves and use our championship hall pass. As fans that bleed Giant Blue. WE DESERVE IT. But, That just my opinion.

I was asked a question recently about what would constitute a successful draft for the New York Giants this year, so I started to think about past drafts and what made them successful or not. Here the Best and Worst from my list….as it applies to entire draft classes for a team. There are certainly individual picks that boggle the mind further, but those are for another day.

The Worst: Too easy here, The New Orleans Saints in 1999 traded away every pick they had in this draft and a 1st and 3rd rounder the following year to acquire Ricky Williams at #5 overall. This is not an indictment of Williams, but to trade away that amount of picks for one player that never won you a championship must be considered a bust. Maybe the only saving grace for the Saints was that Washington, although getting such players as Champ Bailey, Jon Jansen, and LaVar Arrington, and winning the division title in 1999, didn’t return to the playoffs until 2005. This is quite clearly the worst overall draft in history.

The Best: 2007 New York Giants. Jerry Reese in his first draft as a G.M. had 8 picks in 2007, and here are the names: Aaron Ross. Steve Smith, Jay Alford, Zac DeOssie, Kevin Boss, Adam Koets, Michael Johnson, and Ahmad Bradhsaw.

I know I will here about the fact that only two of these players are still on the team 5 years later, but the contributions of all these men were instrumental in a very improbable Super Bowl Championship. In the age of hold-outs, and free agency just getting everyone signed and on the roster is an accomplishment. All 8 players played for the Giants that season and I’m sure we can all recite the impact they had on the magical 2007 season. Kevin Boss stepping in for the injured Jeremy Shockey and making big catches against Dallas and New England, Steve Smith making third down catches and being left alone by the Patriot secondary on the final drive of the Super Bowl, Aaron Ross playing in the Dallas game with an injured shoulder, but still making big tackles to finish the game, and of course the sack by Jay Alford of Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. Ahmad Bradshaw almost single handedly got the Giants into the playoffs with his performance in Buffalo the final week of the season, and of course Zac and Michael Johnson contributed greatly and are still with the team.

Those are my picks…What do you have as the best and worst full drafts?

Big news came out of the NFL late Friday night, and also some news for for the sake of news it seems. First, to the real story. The Rams have traded the rights to the second pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins for draft picks. The Rams will move down to Washington’s #6 spot and also receive the Redskins second round pick this year, and their first round picks for the next two years. Quite a haul for first year GM Les Snead. The Redskins and Browns were rumored for weeks to the teams seeking to trade up into this spot. The Redskins were thought to be players in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes recently, but it has become widely known that Peyton and the Mannings didn’t want to be in the same division as Eli. The Redskins took the plunge, probably over paid a bit, considering the timing of the deal, and now will most likely select QB Robert Griffin III out of Baylor on draft day. Griffin is a player, and will contribute instantly, but it still will be a process to surround him with talent considering the trade of draft picks.

The Rams make out like bandits. They knew they could get a lot for their pick and did. They have a QB in Bradford, and now have the stock pile of picks to continue to improve this team in the near future. Good decisions using those picks will know be the only thing standing between St. Louis and rapid improvement.

Peyton Manning took a trip to Denver yesterday to speak with John Elway, and is on his way to Arizona to interview the Cardinals. He will probably make stops in Miami, K.C., and Houston. All other dreamers of winning the Peyton sweepstakes should probably move on and make other plans….and that brings us to the Jets.

The Jets made no secret that they would, of course, entertain the thought of bringing in Peyton Manning. They should have, that’s a GM’s job, to explore all possibilities. However, the Jets can’t ever seem to do anything quietly, or make it seem like business as usual. They had players saying they NEED to get him, the G.M. was on the radio talking about how they would explore the possibilities. They had put themselves in the talk, so they would be talked about. This quest for recognition is childish at times, like little kids insisting they sit at the grown-ups table. Everyone wants to be a Jet right? Everyone wants to play for the Jets right? When they finally got the word that Peyton had no interest in them, they then felt they needed to do something, anything to show they were on a different path all along. What did they do? They extended the contract of Mark Sanchez. Here is a QB that at the end of the season the GM said had “taken a step back this year”. A kid, who while talented, has shown no ability to lead this team, and maybe shown some signs of either being un-coachable, or maybe lacking a bit of a work ethic. So, Now we know why everyone wants to be a JET….they reward poor performance, don’t ever reprimand or hold you accountable for your actions, and provide NO competition for your job at any level or position. Great Job!

Let’s see Peyton in Miami, Brady in N.E…….

ESPN along with numerous other sites are citing “sources” that Peyton Manning will be released Wednesday. Although this should come as a shock to no one the gravity of the situation is finally upon us. One of the greatest QB’s in the history of the league will soon be a free agent and free to sign wherever he wants for however much money he can obtain.

No one is sure where he may land; however, below I have listed the five NFL teams that his name has been associated with the most. Of course, these are all rumors but it is a starting point for us. The teams are not listed in any certain order My assumption is that Manning will be signing with a new team BEFORE the NFL draft:

Miami Dolphins

Washington Redskins

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

Denver Broncos
