David Diehl, Giants OL, has been arrested in New York City for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Around 8:45PM Sunday New York City Police received reports about a car hitting several cars along 35th Avenue in Queens. When they arrived they found David Diehl driving his BMW. Diehl blew a 0.18 on the breathalizer, twice the legal limit.

Diehl was then arraigned on two counts of impaired driving and ordered to be released on his own recognizance. His license has been suspended and he must return to court on July 26. This is also the first day of Giants’ training camp.

Diehl made this statement: ”I’ve worked hard during my career to set a positive example, and yesterday I fell far short of this standard. I apologize to my family, my fans, the New York Giants, and the NFL. I made a poor decision that I sincerely regret, and, as always, take full responsibility for my actions.”

The Giants released this statement: ”Obviously we are aware of the situation, although we have not yet had a chance to discuss it with David. Since it is an ongoing legal matter, we will refrain from comment at this time, although we will say that David has been an outstanding representative of this organization for the past 10 years, and nobody knows more than David does what is expected of our players both on and off the field.”

Diehl was selected by the Giants in the fifth round in 2003. He’s missed just four game since then and helped the Giants to two Super Bowl victories. On May 22 of this year he was given the team’s Wellington Mara Man of the Year award.

New York has had two football teams for quite a while now. It started with the NY football Giants in 1925, with 8 championships, 4 of which are Superbowls, and countless memories. NY has been a Giants town. The Giants have always been a top notch organization that embodied what the NFL was supposed to be. They have been run with class and unselfishness since the organization was founded by Tim Mara. The NFL is partially what it is today due in large part to Wellington Mara’s foresight and wanting the league to succeed. Their history includes some of the greatest players to wear a uniform, and some of the greatest games to be played in the NFL. What’s not to love about this storied franchise?

With the emergence of the NY Titans/ NY Jets in 1959 (became Jets in 1963) the city now had two football teams. But the town was anything but divided. The Jets did have early success with a win in SuperBowl III over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, it was short lived and the Jets have not had so much of a whiff of the Lombardi Trophy since. They have always been the “other” team in this city and have for the most part been the exact opposite of their big brother. It seems to have gotten worse as of late with the hiring of Mr T and Buddy’s son. If a teams greatness was measured by the boldness and bravado the Jets would be the best team the league has ever seen. But it’s not, and sometimes we have to scratch our heads at the circus on their side of MetLife Stadium. With the way they act you would think they have more Titles than the NY Yankees. Unfortunately they have not won a thing since 1969, and sorry to say, with the way that team has been run it is not looking good for the future either.

So with one team celebrating with another championship ring today, and one team running a three ring circus, I ask who still owns this town? All the trash talk, cussing and more black curtains will not get Rex a foot up on the NY Football Giants. The Jets have the fans and the place to fit in here. But always remember, NY is a Giant town! And always will be.

During the off-season, the staff here at GMenHq will be featuring a member of the Giants Ring of Honor on each Monday and Friday. Today’s feature is on: Wellington Mara

Wellington Mara was born 1916 and died in 2005. Wellington’s funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and was attended by Giants from the past and present. Players rumored to have visited with Wellington before he passed included, but are not limited too: Jeremy Shockey, Tiki Barber, Eli Manning, Kurt Warner, Harry Carson, and Pepper Johnson. Wellington is survived by his wife Ann, 11 children, and 40 plus grandchildren.

Feb 5, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; New York Giants matriarch Ann Mara holds the Vince Lombardi Trophy after Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots at Lucas Oil Stadium.
At the age of nine he was the first ball boy for the New York Giants in 1925. In 1930, Wellington was given an ownership principal in the team. After graduating from college he served as Assistant to the President and Treasurer, 1937; Secretary, 1938–1940; Vice-President and Secretary, 1945–1958; Vice-President, 1959–1965; President, 1966–1990; President and Co-CEO, 1991–2005. For his first 28 years in the organization, he handled the franchise’s football decisions.

Wellington along with his brother Jack are well known for the ground breaking concept of revenue sharing. Without revenue sharing the NFL would not be what it is today. Wellington Mara’s legend is on every football with the simple words: The “Duke.” Wellington Mara was elected to the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame in 1997. While a controlling member of the New York Giants, the Giants won the 1986 and 1990 Super Bowls.
