Giants at the Detroit Lions: A Preview

Yes, you can read.  This is an actual game preview.  Well, not an actual game, but it’s still something to get juiced about.

Tomorrow evening, the Giants will play their first preseason game.  Coughlin says the starters will play the first quarter, and then after that it’ll be time for the young players and veterans trying to latch on, to show their stuff.  Here are a few things you may want to look for:

Whose going to play Wide Reciever: With Brandon London, Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, David Tyree, Steve Smith, and Mario Manningham out with injuries, whose going to be down field catching passes?

Sinorice Moss is one receiver who will definitely be playing.  Unlike most veterans participating in this presason, Moss may be playing for a job.  With so many wide-outs injured, there seems like there has never been a better opportunity for Moss to set himself apart from the pack.  Must-watch factor: 7/10

Do we have another Ed Reed on our hands: Anyone who watched Big Blue last year noticed a chink, in the otherwise sturdy army that was our defense–the secondary.  The Giants addressed that in a big way by drafting Kenny Phillips with the last pick in the first round.  Phillips apparently has been asked to show some restraint in practice, and I cannot wait to see what kind intensity the rookie safety has stored up.  I am just hoping the Lions play their receivers long enough to see what Phillips looks like against first teamers.  Must-watch factor: 10/10

Whose going to replace the Hefty Lefty: We all know the huge void left in our hearts by the departure of Jared Lorenzen’s to the Colts.  Listen, Jared, they won’t appreciate a backup-quarterback like we could.  Anyways, in addition to the void in our hearts, there is now one in the backfield.  Whose going to step up? Former number one overall pick, David  Carr was signed to be the backup, but reports have said he’s been  outplayed by journeyman, Anthony Wright.  It’ll be interesting to see how Coughlin splits up the time in this game.

Only one of them will make the team though because former Kentucky quarterback, Andre Woodson, has the third-string spot locked up.  Third string is a great spot to try out a quarterback with potential, and while his stock fell dramatically, anyone who watched Kentucky upset LSU knows Woodson has potential.  Like Phillips, it’ll be interesting to see him in a game.  Must-watch factor: 5/10
