6. Benny Friedman

Friedman was one hell of a football player. He ranks at number six on the top 10 list because of the sole impression he left on Tim Mara, the father of the Giants’ franchise.

Mara was so impressed with the Friedman, that he offered to bring Friedman’s whole entire team, the Detroit Wolverines, to the Giants just so he could play quarterback for them. That is some hard bargaining on Mara’s part.

Friedman lead the NFL with 20 touchdown passes in 1929 and the record wasn’t broken until 1942. While 20 may not seem like a lot, back in the day NFL teams hardly threw the ball.

They played more like a high school football team. They had a run first mentality and would not opt to pass as much. Then again, that was how professional football was played in that era. This old school Giant quarterback must not be forgotten.
