5. Sam Garnes – SS, Cincinnati Bearcats (1997)

Games: 74
Approximate Value w/ Giants: 33
Seasons w/ Giants: 5
Average AV Per Season: 7

Drafted by the New York Giants in the 5th round (136th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft, a few picks after Florida Gators center Jeff Mitchell went to the Baltimore Ravens.

In five seasons with Big Blue, Garnes started 73 of 74 games played, intercepting six balls, knocking down eight. He also had two forced fumbles and two sacks, plus more than 330 combined tackles.

Sam was second to Jessie Armstead in combined tackles in 1999 with 91 (73 of which were solo). His 59 solo tackles in 2001 were 5th most on the team. We called Garnes one of the best draft steals of the ’90s, as his draft class of 1997 got an honorable mention on our list of the best draft classes in franchise history. Sam was also an honorable mention on our Giants All-Rookie Team.
