The rookie safety will have to play an enormous role and, thus far, he appears up to the challenge. Traditionally, the Giants defense has been anchored by a middle linebacker, but in reality, Antonio Pierce was the last effective leader of the defense.  Pierce was more valuable than his physical ability, and in his time with the Giants, he anchored top defenses with his communication and play-calling.

In recent times, that valuable voice has been missing.  Thompson has been trying to fill that role this summer.  The safety is a student of the game and has drawn praise from all, most notably coach McAdoo.  In a recent post on Giants.com, Michael Eisen wrote, “As he’s become more immersed in the defense, Thompson’s technique has improved, as have his reactions and responses to situations.”

Most recently, Thompson drew praise from former Giants tight end, and current television commentator, Howard Cross.  During the Dolphins game, Cross noted how Thompson was calling the first team defense and praised the rookie for his knowledge and leadership.

To be clear, Thompson can be a huge x-factor with much to prove.  He isn’t the most notable name on this list, but his potential impact on the defense is just as important.  If he can lead the secondary, as much through his communication as his production, he gives the Giants that defensive quarterback they’ve lacked since Pierce retired.
