5. S Xavier McKinney

In what I believe was the NY Giants’ single best draft pick of 2020, rookie safety Xavier McKinney is heading into East Rutherford with expectations that he can be a rock-solid starter for the team for years.

Many NY Giants fans were clamoring for the team to select Isaiah Simmons in round one, but it seems like the team was able to land an awesome consolation prize in the former Alabama stud. A universally pegged top-twenty draft prospect, McKinney slipped all the way to pick #36 and fell right into Dave Gettleman’s lap.

Mckinney is one of those new-age safties that can line up all over the field and create havoc. Over his last two seasons in college, the stud safety racked up 169 tackles, 11.5 tackles-for-loss, 6 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 5 interceptions, and 15 passes defended.

The guy simply has a nose for the football and making game-changing plays.

He’s a jack of all trades that, paired with similarly versatile Jabrill Peppers appears ready to wreak havoc on the NFL early on. He’ll step into a wonderful opportunity as he’s surely going to be penciled in as the day one free safety and will have plenty of chances to make plays.

Bryant McFadden, former NFL veteran turned CBSSports.com analyst, has high hopes for the rookie out of Alabama to do just that.

Those are some bold words, and while NY Giants fans will surely welcome them, I think we’d sign up for the rookie of the year or just the Pro Bowl right now in a heartbeat.

Mckinney has said all the right things since being drafted and has participated in all team activity, two very encouraging signs so far.

We’ll see if his ball-hawking nature translates to the NFL — I’m betting it will.
