Round 2, #42: The NY Giants select: Creed Humphrey OG/C, Oklahoma

Other players considered: Gregory Rousseau, Wyatt Davis, Alex Leatherwood

To start Round 2, the NY Giants add more mean to their offensive line. Taking Creed Humphrey would add much-needed competition with both Will Hernandez and Shane Lemieux at guard.

Humphrey has been an absolute stud offensive lineman for three years now. He earned 2nd-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2018 before earning 1st-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2019 and ’20. He backed up his play with even more accolades, as he can boast himself as the two-time consecutive reigning Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year.

A 6’5, 320-pound road grader, Humphrey will bring some impressive pedigree to the Giants’ offensive line. It’s no secret this has been one of the team’s Achilles heel for several years now. Here, Dave Gettleman continues his rebuild of the offensive line.

With the pick, the Giants passed up on Rousseau who was very enticing as a pass rusher in round two. However, with an extra pick in the 2nd round, there is plenty of good pass rushers available. It wasn’t worth fooling around with the offensive line and missing out on a talent like Creed Humphrey. He is a Day One talent and the NY Giants would be ecstatic to add him in Round 2.

Round 2, #49 Overall: The NY Giants select: Alex Leatherwood, OL, Alabama

Other Players Considered: Baron Browning, Wyatt Davis, Levi Onwuzurike

Thanks to the Cardinals, the Giants add a second 2nd round pick and top-50 overall selection here at #49. With the pick, they take DeVonta Smith’s teammate and give Creed Humphrey a fellow rookie offensive lineman to buddy up with and compete with the existing players.

Putting together an offensive line group with Leatherwood, Humphrey, Lemieux, and Hernandez would separate the best two of the bunch. At worst, the Giants are supplementing depth at one of football’s most important positions. The lack of depth and a lack of clear-cut options to start on the line has held back this team’s offense for a long time. With Hernandez entering a contract year and a make-or-break season, he will need to likely replace down the road. Add in Nate Solder’s inevitable departure after this season, and the Giants will be bound with options for the future here.

Leatherwood could compete at tackle with Matt Peart and Nate Solder to be both the starting or swing tackle for the offense. At worst, either Peart a 3rd round pick, or Leatherwood a 2nd round pick, could end up as the team’s future swing tackle. It’s an important thing to have but Leatherwood, another potential 1st Round talent, offers far more upside with dominant potential at guard.
