Round 6 (201st Overall): Shakur Brown, CB, Michigan State

While Gettleman may be associated with his love for his hog-mollies, perhaps his favorite position group in the secondary. Since 2018, he’s placed a huge emphasis on improving the group – using all avenues from the traditional draft, the supplemental draft and free agency to bolster the unit.

Shakur Brown could easily be a fourth or fifth round pick, but after a disappointing pro day he slides to the Giants at 201st overall. His impressive tape at Michigan State, along with his ability to play both the inside and outside corner positions will give the Giants’ fantastic depth at corner.

Brown possesses abilities that Gettleman has lauded in his defensive backs – great ball skills, impressive versatility, undeniable smarts and strong play against the run. The sheer amount of talent in the team’s secondary with the addition of Brown would be an embarrassment of riches.

The real music to coach Graham’s ears will be the former Spartan’s ability to excel in something the Giants will be running more of next season – man coverage. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see Brown push last year’s fourth round selection, Darnay Holmes, for playing time as the team’s slot corner.

Gettleman has done a good job of finding talent in the latter rounds of the draft over recent seasons. If he can get Brown in the sixth round, to go along with the other prior late round picks, he’ll strike gold again.
