If Dave Gettleman retires or is fired as NY Giants general manager, there are certain traits John Mara and Co. must identify in his successor
Dave Gettleman’s tenure with the NY Giants may finally come to an end at the season’s finish.
It has been a disastrous tenure at that.
Gettleman has compiled a putrid 18-40 record since the beginning of 2018, with no playoff appearances. Gettleman, 70, had an unwillingness to adapt to the nuances of today’s NFL. His ability to spot NFL talent at the college level has to be questioned, as he has missed on several high draft picks.
Owner John Mara is extremely loyal and will most likely not “fire” Gettleman instead allow him to resign or retire … That begs the question if Gettleman was not the personality to turn the franchise what do the Giants look for in their next GM.
We take a look here.
These are the traits the NY Giants must target in Dave Gettleman’s replacement as GM
Adept with analytics
The jokes, memes, and GIFS were out there after Gettleman’s “job on the line press conference” before the 2020 season.
We all made fun of the fact that he talked about a group of computer specialists employed by the NY Giants to help with analytics.
The fact is Gettleman is an old-school pen, paper, and stopwatch guy, who did not buy into all the technology that goes into a successful franchise.
Take a look at any NFL sideline every coach has a Microsoft Surface. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the data successful operations use to make their decisions from March to the final whistle of their final game of the season.
It is not the future anymore it is the here and now.
This franchise needs a young analytically focused GM who can use the data to blend with ther football knowledge.
All the technology and analytics will not help if you do not know the difference between Cover 2 and Cover 4.

Has a successful track record
Aside from analytics, John Mara should be looking for someone that has won before.
At minimum someone that has had success in rebuilding or talent development. Two key areas Gettleman severely lacked in with the NY Giants.
The jackpot is a veteran successful GM that has found their way through the gauntlet of changes in today’s NFL. It is more likely that Mara finds a young up-and-comer who has been in the role of Assistant GM or Talent evaluator for a successful franchise.
Either path that is chosen needs to lead to someone who knows how to win, as that is what the NY Giants have done in a very long time.

Joe Judge ties
Joe Judge comes from arguably the most successful franchise in NFL history, working for arguably the most successful coach in NFL history.
If the Giants want to go all-in with Joe Judge, let him have some input into the choice of what is ultimately his boss.
It sounds weird, but he could be more comfortable with someone he has a history with.
Judge has been thrust into the world that is New York and has been really not given a ton to work with. I am not fully absolving him from blame by no means, but Gettleman did him zero favors with the Marc Columbo hire and Jason Garret for that matter.
How much pull does Judge have to make some decisions?
It has not looked like much as most seem to have come from Gettleman himself. I certainly do not mean give Judge full autonomy but allow his opinion into the mix. Somebody he is comfortable working for could go along way in allowing him to be successful.
The NY Giants truly need an overhaul with this franchise. it has to start with John Mara realizing that he cannot continue to be the loyal servant that he has been. I have said before, he can throw as many trash cans as he wants but until he takes some responsibility for his choices of who runs the ins and outs of the day to day the franchise will never again see the heights it once saw.
