Candidate #4: Los Angeles Chargers QB Coach Joe Lombardi

Joe Lombardi is the thid external candidate here.

Lombardi is the Chargers’ current QB coach as he helped with the guidance and tutelage of Justin Herbert. The calculus for Lombardi might be between coaching one of the league’s premier young quarterbacks and becoming a head coach somewhere this offseason.

Before working with Herbert this season, Lombardi was Drew Brees’ coach in New Orleans for the past five years. He helped extend Brees’ career into the twilight age of 40+ years old.

Lombardi has been an NFL lifer since 2006 where he started with the Falcons. He got his big break in 2007 when Sean Payton added him to his staff as an offensive assistant. From there, he stayed with the Saints for 14 years before moving out to the West Coast this year.

Lombardi has seen nothing but success for most of his NFL coaching tenure. He is 50 years old and seems poised to make the jump to a head coaching job soon enough. Will the Giants be the team to give him that opportunity?
