According to league sources, the New York Giants have not approached defensive lineman Leonard Williams about restructuring his contract

The New York Giants have not had any discussions about restructuring defensive lineman Leonard Williams’ contract, league sources tell FanSided.

New Giants general manager Joe Schoen has vowed to create $40 million in new cap space prior to the new league-year beginning on March 16, but to date, Williams has not been part of those discussions.

Why New York Giants restructuring Leonard Williams’ contract is unlikely

It is unlikely that the New York Giants would approach Williams, because there is little to be gained, in terms of cap space. Williams has two years remaining on his contract, and the $19 million base salary and prorated $7.5 million of his signing bonus is fully guaranteed in 2022.

Williams and the New York Giants agreed to terms last offseason on a three-year deal, worth $63 million that included a $22.5 million signing bonus and $45 million in guarantees.

So far this week, Schoen and the New York Giants have restructured wide receiver Sterling Shepard’s contract, and released veteran punter Riley Dixon.

With four days remaining until free agency begins, the New York Giants currently are approximately $6.4 million under the cap.

Last season, Williams produced 6.5 sacks, along with a career-high 81 total tackles, and is one year removed from setting a career-high 11.5 sacks.
