Round 3, Pick No. 68: Kerby Joseph, S, Illinois

It feels worthwhile to bring a young safety into the mix with the departure of Logan Ryan, and I like what I read about Kerby Joseph.

He’s again a defender who can be used in a variety of ways – he’s a capable blitzer, and he can turn the ball over in the passing game. He’s able to drop into zone coverage or step up and press a receiver. He’s also fundamentally sound against the running game.

Joseph is 6’1 and weighs 200 pounds, so ideally I’d like to see him add about 10 pounds to his frame, while maintaining his speed. If he could do that, I think he could be a prototypical safety who can be used in a variety of ways.

While there’s certainly a chance he could challenge for a starting job or playing time right away as a third-round pick with his pedigree, at the very least it seems that he’d be able to chip in on passing downs in some sort of nickel package, while developing more for the future.
