Since being selected No. 2 overall in 2018, Saquon Barkley has optimized what it means to be a New York Giant. Through the changes in management, offensive line, and quarterback, Barkley has been the heart and soul of New York Giants football. Just the idea of Saquon in another team's threads makes Giants fans' skin crawl.
Although beloved by the fans and his public address of wanting to stay a Giant, the end of the road might be in sight. With salary negotiations stalling last offseason and No. 26 again demanding premium dollars - his time with the Giants could be coming to a close. Such a great player will undoubtedly grab the attention of many teams in free agency. Here are four teams to keep an eye on as potential suitors for Barkley's services in 2024:
4. Houston Texans
In his rookie season, no one could have predicted just how good quarterback C.J. Stroud would be for the Houston Texans. With first-time head coach DeMeco Ryans and a roster lacking talent, many thought Stroud would face his fair share of struggles in Year 1. However, this thought could not have been further from the truth.
Simply put, Stroud was incredible right from the jump. Stroud put the team on his back and carried them to the playoffs and a Wild Card Round win against the Cleveland Browns. With a blossoming connection with receivers Nico Collins and Tank Dell, the Texans passing attack was among the league's best.
Stroud's rookie campaign is even more impressive due to Houston's lack of run game. Rather than taking the "second-year leap" as many hoped, Dameon Pierce seemed to take steps backward. Pierce doesn't fit into the Texans' new and improved outside zone scheme. While Devin Singletary took most of the workload down the stretch, it was clear that the run game was the Texans' Achilles heel.
With a drastic change from rebuild to contenders, the Texans will surely monitor Barkley's availability. Pro Football Focus listed the Texans as Barkley's ideal landing spot and even compared Barkley's pending free agency to LeSean McCoy in 2015.
"Houston got all it could out of free agent acquisition Devin Singletary, and it appears upshot 2022 rookie Dameon Pierce is not a great fit in the run scheme. Barkley can get to the edge well in outside zone and make defenders miss in space while also taking pressure off C.J. Stroud. The Texans should have had a much higher pass rate in 2023 and too often deployed a run-run-pass sequence, but Barkley is also an asset as a pass catcher and pass blocker."PFF
3. Los Angeles Chargers
With Jim Harbaugh taking over as head coach, there is no doubt he will look to implement a solid running game like he did during his time at University of Michigan. When watching Wolverines football, it's tough not to notice the ground-and-pound, run-first scheme that saw them trounce defenses en route to a national title.
With star wideouts Keenan Allen and Mike Williams likely to test free agency, the Chargers roster will look much different next season. For Harbaugh, handing the torch from Michigan running back Blake Corum to Barkley will be a perfect way for him to set the tone, and cement his coaching style in LA. With Austin Ekeler having a down year in 2023, the Chargers may hesitate to pay him the large contract he will attract in free agency.
Ryan Leaf, a former teammate and close friend of Harbaugh's, talked about what he expects to see from Harbaugh as head coach and his potential interest in Barkley.
"Austin Ekeler is a big part of what it could be with them running the football, but I do think that Saquon Barkley is going to be at the top of [Harbaug's] list, in terms of, what he wants to do with the running back position with him being a free agent."Ryan Leaf
For many, the city of Los Angeles is a lot more admirable than that of East Rutherford. Don't be surprised if Harbaugh attempts to make a signature move and translate his run-first scheme into the NFL by signing Barkley to a long-term deal.
2. Chicago Bears
Much like the 2023 Texans, the Bears hope to go from one of the league's worst in 2023 to contenders in 2024. With the No. 1 overall draft selection being a significant point of contention, along with Justin Fields' future, the Bears are looking to make changes quickly to improve their roster in 2024.
At last season's trade deadline, the acquisition of Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders completely shifted the attitude and morale of the Bears. Quickly moving the defense from an average unit to among the league's best, the Bears recognize that a formidable offense can turn them into a threat in the NFC.
While many believe that the Bears will ship Fields off and select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, they would love to pair Barkley with any of the QBs at their disposal. In 2023, the Bears felt the effect of letting David Montgomery leave in the offseason for nothing. General manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will be fighting for their jobs next season, and there is no better way to help a young, developing quarterback than surrounding him with weapons.
Barkley heading to Chicago makes a ton of sense. With the cap space to use and entering the draft and free agency in an aggressive state of mind, the Bears can offer Barkley a contract he simply can't refuse.
1. Baltimore Ravens
Every year, it seems that the Baltimore Ravens find themselves in the same predicament. Constantly battling the injury bug, specifically at the running back position, they never seem to be able to capitalize on their elite offensive line and quarterback combination. Seeing J.K Dobbins hobble off the field year after year has ripped fans' hearts out, and they may be looking for more of a proven commodity to line up aside the league's MVP.
After seeing the Chiefs beat them in the AFC Championship Game en route to another Super Bowl, the Ravens' mentality will drastically shift, like many NFL teams, to, "How do we beat Patrick Mahomes?" Mahomes has proven that he is one of the best to ever do it and is yet to be dethroned by anyone not named Joe Burrow (once) or Tom Brady (twice). Moving forward, in order to contend in the AFC, there is no doubt you will have to go through Kansas City.
Bleacher Report named the Ravens as a top landing spot for Giants RB Saquon Barkley

Having just signed Lamar Jackson to a massive contract, it is time to surround him with elite weapons to make his job easier. While often very effective, the Ravens' rushing attack consisted of a combination of Gus Edwards and Justice Hill last season. Can you imagine how the opposing defense would feel on a read-option play with Lamar and Saquon in the backfield?
With aspirations of returning to a No. 1 seed and home-field advantage through the playoffs in 2024, look for the Ravens to be aggressive in their pursuit of an RB to pair with their star QB. Although there is no certainty that Barkley won't be back in East Rutherford next year, there is no question that his services will be sought after. The Giants will have to reach deep into their pockets to retain the heart and soul of the team.
