If you're furious with the performance from the officials on Thursday night, you're not alone. The final whistle just went off in Santa Clara and unfortunately for the New York Giants, they're now 1-2 on the year after suffering a 30-12 loss to the 49ers in primetime.
We don't want to make any excuses - give credit to San Francisco for making the necessary plays to improve to 3-0 on the year. However, a major topic of conversation will no question be on some of bogus calls made by the group in stripes.
Throughout this contest, head man Brian Daboll was livid with all the laundry he was seeing tossed on the field against his team. Here are the three worst calls we saw from the refs in this one:
3. Roughing the passer on Leonard Williams in the first half
To start, this was just awful. The Giants were having a nightmare trying to stop the 49ers on third down throughout the game. Late in the second quarter, the Giants were finally able to make a play, with George Kittle being stopped short of the sticks. However, a penatly was called on Leonard Williams for roughing the passer. You be the judge:

This was a bang-bang play. With Williams going full speed, what is he supposed to do here? We understand that the refs want to protect the quarterback, but in our book, Williams didn't do anything wrong. He himself was quite upset with the call. He couldn't believe that the flag was thrown and neither could Giants fans.
Instead of that stop forcing a Jake Moody field goal attempt, the 49ers were given a first down and star running back Christian McCaffrey was able to run in for a short touchdown run moments after. At the time, the Giants were down 10-3, but the McCaffrey score made it 17-3. That was a brutal call and one we entirely disagree with.
2. Letting Trent Williams get away with a Mike Tyson-type haymaker
As for No. 2 on our list, San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams should be thanking his lucky stars that he was able to take the field for the second half. Right before the break, Williams went at it with Giants defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson. The two were flagged, but Williams got away with a cheap shot. This was totally over the line:
Here's another angle of what Trent Williams did. This is almost always an ejection.

Yup, the cameras caught Williams throwing a right hook at Robinson's helmet. As Ari Meirov noted, this is an ejection just about every time it happens. Williams was caught red-handed in this case, but the officials acted like it never happened. Coach Dabes saw how everything went down and he was waiting for the All-Pro OT to get tossed.
That didn't happen, however. The two had to be separated and then they jogged off the field. Not having Williams out there for the final 30 minutes of action would have made a major difference. We're not saying that the Giants would have won the game if Williams had gotten ejected, but this kind of a missed call by the refs is inexcusable. Williams better get fined for this behavior. There's no room in the NFL for this trash.
1. Illegal contact on Kayvon Thibodeaux on George Kittle
This play has received plenty of mixed reactions on social media, but this was probably what sent Daboll over the top and caused him to lose his mind on the refs. On third down, again, the Giants were able to make a stop, but a penalty was called on former No. 5 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux for illegal contact on Kittle.
We have gone back and forth on this penalty, as Thibodeaux appears to shove Kittle, but this was another soft call that shouldn't have been called either. It's not like Thibodeaux aggressively launched Kittle to the turf or anything. He dropped back in coverage and put his hands on him yes, but it wasn't over the top or anything - again, very soft. Coach Dabes was HOT when he saw this:

The Giants were fortunately able to hold the 49ers to a field goal, but Daboll was still furious. He ended up having a talk with the crew to voice his displeasure. All in all, the Giants didn't do much on offense to hang close with the 49ers, a team expected to push for a Super Bowl title this winter. They're a tremendous squad.
With that said, the Giants had to be perfect to have a shot and the refs having their terrible performance only made the uphill climb even more difficult for the G-Men. We're not saying the loss is on the refs, but come on, clean it up ASAP. They can't have this kind of a stinker and expect people to let them off the hook.
