Plax To Return In 2011?

As a fan, would you welcome Plaxico Burress back?

The NY Post reported today that the Giants front office would be open to having the 33 year old former Giant star receiver back on the squad.  He’ll be released in June – right in time for training camp.

Justin Tuck said of the matter when asked: [via]

"“I know that he’s paid his debt to society, and I think he’s overpaid his debt to society. Yeah, I would love to see him back. We’ve all seen how the Mike Vick situation has played out. And we all know that Plaxico is one of the most talented wide receivers to ever play this game. Whether he’s here, or wherever he comes back, he’s gonna come back with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove a point. So, as a defensive player, I would much rather that guy be on our team than not. And plus, he’s a difference-maker. I would love to see him back.”"

I’m into second chances, and the fact is that under Plaxico Burress in 2007 and 2008 the Giants were extremely hard to stop.  In 2008 the Giants went 12-1 before Plax shot himself… granted the offensive line played tremendously but having that big tall threat at WR it opens up the rest of the offense. The Giants without Burress have had to change their offense, I’ve said myself they’ve looked BETTER than they did in 2008 in terms of the dynamics on offense.  But in terms of pure execution and stretching the defense out the Giants could use Burress as that big threat at WR they’ve been missing since Plax left.

As a triple threat – Hakeem Nicks, Steve Smith, and Mario Manningham have been good for the Giants.  With Nicks and Smith injured, it took Derek Hagan a few weeks before he was fully back in the saddle and catching 3rd downs efficiently.  Even so — he’s not 6’6″ like Plax is.

Ramses Barden is tall, but not imposing — he can’t block downfield like Plax did.  He hasn’t come along all that quickly yet either, though 2011 might be different.

Kevin Boss is tall, imposing, has great hands  — but isn’t used nearly enough as a pass catching TE.  Drives me crazy, drove Jeremy Shockey nuts too.  OC Kevin Gilbride and Eli need to get together and discuss this offseason how they can better spread the ball around to their main targets next year.

I think it’s worth bringing him in for a workout in June, he helped give NY a championship after all.
