Giants Making Some Moves Too

Here are some of the signings the Giants have made in recent days that have been drowned out by the big name wake the Eagles have been making in their Free Agency campaign.

WR Michael Clayton – the veteran WR was one of the few working out with Eli Manning early on at Hoboken High, and looks to be rounding out the Giants veteran WR core in 2011. He only caught a few passes last year, and showed noticeable miscommunication with Eli at times, but given the circumstances and missing piece (Smith) Clayon will have as good a chance as any WR other than Nicks and Manningham to make the final cut. With this signing, it looks like the Giants genuinely believe in what he brings to the table as well.

DT Gabe Watson – have agreed to terms with the former AZ Cardinal to add a bit of veteran depth to the interior of their defensive line. Gosh, with all these AZ dealings you really have to wonder if there’s any truth to the Steve Smith rumor floating around. Who knows about that, but let’s think about this for a minute. Now I can’t say I love this move, but he’s a younger, bigger, stronger DT than Rocky Bernard and has been decent each time the Giants have played the Cardinals particularly in his run stopping abilities. The Giants don’t forget opposing guys they’ve been impressed with apparently, a trend you’ll see further developed shortly down the list.

QB David Carr – Welp, here we are again. It’s a long drive back from San Francisco Dave, but welcome back. The legendary #1 pick turned backup QB for the Panthers, Giants, and Niners is headed back to NY to play for the GMEN once again. Rosenfels may indeed be cut for cap room, as I’m sure Carr is dying to play at any price with the Giants organization after his turmoil filled stint in Frisco.

RB Andre Brown – another blast from the past that I never saw coming in a million years. Why the Giants are bringing back Brown after a ruptured Achilles the year they drafted him in 2009 is beyond me. He’s been on like 18 teams since he left the Giants, and now he’s back in Blue after all that? Sounds like the Giants REALLY want this one to work out and like their memory of Jason Snelling, they haven’t forgotten how high they were on him a couple of years ago.

P Steve Weatherford – is this a parting salute to Matt Dodge in a nutshell? The former Jets punter was the 5th best punter in the NFL last season, Matt Dodge was the 4th worst. He can hold, Dodge can’t. He puts 50% of his punts inside the 20, Dodge put like 2. I think that settles it then, doesn’t it? Great move by the Giants here.

*** RUMORS ***

More and more speculation about the Giants free agency wish list emerging every day.

FB John Kuhn was rumored to be on the Giants short list at fullback since they cut Madison Hedgecock, and why wouldn’t they be? They guy can run, block, and catch the ball consistently — and the Packers were one of the teams that still utilize their FB’s to run a dynamic offense the same way the Giants have been trying to develop their attack. But when Green Bay re-signed Kuhn, the Giants have been forced to look elsewhere for a reliable FB option in free agency.
