Going into the GIANTS-Jets game, I had posted the five things to watch going into the game. Here is a recap on how those things panned out during the game.
1.) Matt Dodge vs. Steve Weatherford: Another game, another almost even battle. I have to believe that if the punters end up even at the end of preseason then Matt Dodge is going to get the nod. He is younger and has more upside (yes a punter can have upside). In all honesty, I believe the GIANTS will make the decision after the Patriots game. As of right now, I say slight advantage Dodge (maybe 55-45).
2.) Tight Ends: Hmm, Hmm, Beckum had two catches for 16 yards and Ballard had one catch for one catch for 16 yards. Ho-Hum. Blocking was slightly above average tonight. Beckum had NO ABILITY to get open tonight. He was unable to create space and does not give his QB a large target to throw at. Pascoe and Ballard both blocked decently. The GIANTS have to be looking at waivers and wondering if any TE options will be come available.
3.) Aaron Ross: Ahh finally some good news from the game. Aaron Ross played a good game. He was very physical with Plax and looked very confident on the field. If he can play that way going forward the GIANTS top two corners will be okay. I still do not like when Ross and Webster back off the line-of-scrimmage though.
4.) Offensive Line: The starters did a decent job. The GIANTS were able to move the ball on the ground and in the air. However, Eli got pressured and made a couple of bad passes because of that pressure. Overall they are making progress but they still have room for improvement and hopefully they can play together some on Thursday night (even if Eli does not play).
5.) Secondary: Played very well tonight. They were physical with Holmes and Plax and it showed. Even on the TD pass to Holmes, there was good coverage. Overall, I was happy with how they played tonight!
Something that should of been on the things to watch, but was not, was Special Teams. Lord they were awful tonight. Horrible. Slow. Could not tackle. Could not block. Could not catch. There will be more to come about this area of the team.
