Report: Coach Coughlin Back On The Hot Seat

Our good friend Jesse Bartolis of NFL Mocks has a great read up today concerning NFL head coaches on the hot seat right now.

Up at #5 is the NY Giants’ Tom Coughlin who will be heading into the softest part of the schedule coming up against the Dolphins and their bye week.

#5 Tom Coughlin (Getting warmer)

Fun little fact: the Giants have started 5-2 (or better) in every season under coach Tom Coughlin. Not so fun fact? They have been pathetic in the second half of the season the last two years. Tom Coughlin is a good coach and the Giants are a very loyal organization. But, this team has a lot of veteran leadership, a quality quarterback, and a talented pass rush and they have had terrible second half’s two years in a row that cost them the playoffs and then are coming out flat and playing poorly already this year. They barely squeaked by the Cardinals and then lost at home vs the Seahawks, after they played poorly vs the Cardinals. This can’t happen anymore.

Coughlin still has a shot at starting 5-2, they play the Bills (have a bye week) and then the Dolphins the next three weeks, but their second half of the schedule is brutal. Two games vs Dallas, a game each vs Washington and Philadelphia, and then games vs the Patriots, Packers, Jets, 49ers, and Saints. It could be a long year, especially if they continue to play the way they are playing now.

Tom Coughlin is a good coach but seems to have lost his hardnose past.Pretty much the same fired up defense of Spagnulo but totally flat under Perry Fuell completely uninspired.Offense is predictable and confused under Gilbride.TC needs to dump both of these coordinators and start telling some of the prima donnas to get off the sidelines and play hurt.

@judithmay.artist I dont think any aspect is uninspired. The offensive line is basically new. Will take time to ge the run game going… execution not play calls largely the issue here. a couple calls here and there i dont like, but Eli had 400+ yards and they lost. I would point to the defense letting them score almost at will at critical times, early and late in the game.

I think TThomas and JTuck not being in the game hurts the defense, hugely. best run stoppers the Giants have are out. Veterans are banged up, sitting out, its going to take some time to get this team hitting on all cylinders. they can still get hot, beat the division rivals and win the division and make the playoffs this year. they have to finish strong this year.

almost finished last game, Cruz slipped on a timing pattern. simple as that. they were in position to go ahead and score to end the game… pick 6 was really unfortunate but that little slip on the 3 yard line cost them.

Im not so sure its coughlin who is the problem. I think its the same playbook they’ve been using for years, under Glibride, that is just too easy for Defenses and opposing coordinators to plan for. The defense has suffered with injuries, but whatever alignment they are using against the run is just not working at all. The Coordinators for the Giants should be on the Hotseat. Coughlin is a great coach who doesnt make many mistakes and doesnt miss much. He is as astute as they come and he is management skills are also as good as they come. Gilbride and Fewel need to pick it up big time
