This Ain’t Your Grandfathers New York Giants

facebooktwitterreddit

These words were uttered a few years back by an announcer doing a game as the New York Giants started to throw the ball downfield with more regularity, and it applies even more today.

Yesterday there was a funny tweet from @ajcnj56 that said “Shovel passes, WR Reverse pass, Fake FG..I feel like I am in a Costanza opposite realm”  This pertaining to watching the New York Giants practice in East Rutherford yesterday.

The point that I like to make is that Tom Coughlin and Kevin Gilbride deserve a lot of credit for evolving with the NFL.  Tom and Kevin had been boxed by the media as “OLD TIME’ and “Stuck in their ways” guys, butt he opposite is really true.  Think of how the Giants went from a run first, run often, throw if you have to, but throw it to the running back offense to what might be one of the most explosive offenses in football.  Jerry Reese also deserves some credit here for finding the right athletes to plug in, but without Tom and Kevin being willing and eager to adapt, it would have been for naught.

Having Eli as a QB is key of course, but even they had to have the thought process of being accepting of his suggestions, and to make him the leader of the team.  They have been nothing short of innovative and forward thinking despite what people write or think of these two elder wise men.

One can only hope the mainstream media can evolve as much and give these men credit for what they have accomplished and will accomplish in the future.
