Giants to release center David Baas

Sources with knowledge of the situation have informed the Newark-Star Ledger that the Giants will cut David Baas. The veteran center was set to earn $8.2 million next season, but only $1.775 million will come off the team’s salary cap. The remaining $6.45 will count as “dead money” further hamstringing Jerry Reese and co.

The Giants placed the 32-year old on Injured Reserve following a knee injury suffered in week 7 versus Minnesota. Green Bay’s Evan Dietrich-Smith and New Orleans’ Brian De La Puente have been rumored targets for New York. Either would be a handsome addition keeping the interior pocket clean for Eli Manning.

I have been pounding the table for Evan Dietrich-Smith. Really hoping it will be him, but I think this move signifies they have a center pretty much locked up to sign quickly when FA begins tomorrow. Otherwise, I think they would have made Baas a post June 1st cut to save extra money.

It would appear that way. Manning’s comfort level is clearly a priority.. and well it should be.

Reasonable assumption. Even if JR signs EDS he should still draft Bryan Stork in the 4th (could very well be there) to start growing his replacement. Gotta stop this FA to FA to FA cycle at Center… not how Mara wants it done… even though Sean O’Hara was one of my favorite Giants. Some scouts have opined Stork needs a year in the NFL weight room before he’s ready to start full time, but as the 2013 Remington Trophy winner as the nation’s top Center, he’s got quickness and is technically sound. If JR doesn’t land a FA Center who’s a bona fide starter, then he has to go after Weston Richburg or Marcus Martin earlier in the draft.

Richburg would be a nice value add..
