27-year old Rusty Smith of Florida Atlantic University fame is the latest addition to the Giants’ quarterback clan. He’s slated to ‘compete’ with reserve arms Josh Freeman, Ryan Nassib and Curtis Painter during training camp for a backup role. However, unless Nassib is used as a draft-day trade piece or Freeman self-destructs, the QB trio appears all but set — at least looking from a talent lens.

A 6th round draft choice by Tennessee in 2010, Smith looks the part physically at 6’5 220 with a strong arm. But his 56% completion percentage in the Sun Belt was a portend for professional struggles. He’s posted a 29.3 QB Rating in three career games, including 17-31 for 138 yards and three interceptions in his lone start back in 2010 against the Texans. On a positive note, he’s only taken one sack and gets rid of the rock quickly.

Smith first visited with the Giants on April 4th, and also worked out with the Saints on April 17th. He garnered no other interest around the league and is in all likelihood strictly a camp body.
