2015 NFL Draft: New York Giants Draft DB Mykkele Thompson

In the fifth round of the NFL draft the New York Giants drafted defensive back Mykkele Thompson. Thompson is a former high school quarterback turned safety for the Texas Longshorns. Personally I really like his versatility, he could be used all over the field.

Thompson has a lot of things going for him, he played safety both safety and cornerback. Those are two positions the Giants desperately need depth at. Last season their secondary was one of the NFL’s worst.

This pick seems a bit odd to me because the Giants drafted Landon Collins to play safety yesterday. Adding more depth could never hurt, but at this point in the draft it’s strange. After all Jerry Reese did say that there is an immediate “need” at the safety position a couple of weeks ago.

Thompson is known for being a hard hitter despite his small size. He has a lot of heart and brings his A-game to the field every time. He has a lot of experience being used all over the field, even at nickel corner.

The Giants let Walter Thurmond walk this offseason, so Thompson could very well be his replacement. Thurmond was brought in to be the Giants’ nickel corner but got hurt last season and wasn’t resigned.

Personally, I feel like this was a little bit of a reach in the fifth round, but who am I to question the madness of Jerry Reese? Reese has done a fantastic job so far, and I’m going to trust him with this one. He obviously sees a lot of potential in this young athlete.
