New York Giants: Offense Primed For Big Season

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Giants are primed to be one of the best offensive attacks in the National Football League in the 2015 season. It was clear, despite their 6-10 record in 2014, that offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, was building something special. After boasting a top 10 offense last season, the Giants will be one of the most unstoppable offenses in 2015.

The Giants just have too many weapons to contain. How do you stop Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz? It’s not like you can sleep on Rueben Randle and Larry Donnell.

The Giants offensive line will be improved with the return of a healthy Geoff Schwartz and the addition of Ereck Flowers, the rookie right tackle from Miami. An improved offensive line means an improved rushing attack from Rashad Jennings, Shane Vereen and the young Andre Williams.

This offense is going to make opposing defensive coordinators lose a lot of sleep. A franchise quarterback with all the weapons he could desire, it is almost unfair.

The only way the offense can be beat is if they beat themselves. If Manning turns the ball over or the offensive line fails to live up to expectations, we may be having a bitter conversation this time next year. The Giants offense has too much talent, not to put up big time numbers.

Manning looks rejuvenated in the new offense from McAdoo. It makes you wonder what could have been if the Giants did away with Kevin Gilbride years ago. McAdoo’s quick release offense is perfect for Manning. The west coast attack requires him to keep his timing and it keeps him out of trouble. When Manning develops a rhythm there is no defense he cannot slice apart like a surgeon on a mission.

What McAdoo’s offense does so superbly is that it takes advantage of the big time playmakers it has. Instead of throwing a deep bomb just to throw the deep bomb, the offense is calculated. It nickels and dimes you with short and intermediate passes. The Giants churn out big plays because of their receivers’ ability to get yards after the catch.

And when you start biting on the underneath routes, Manning hits Beckham Jr. deep down the field for the game changing play. There are really three principles to McAdoo’s philosophy. First he likes to spread the field with great options for Manning; making the defense cover the width of the field only plays into the Giants favor. Secondly he likes Manning to have a quick and in time release. Finally he likes to get playmaking receivers the ball in the open field.

When you put it all together and the players execute, it is very challenging to stop. The best way to stop the offense is also the best way to get beat. Defenses have no choice but to be physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage. Their goal is to reroute the receivers, to take them out of position and knock the timing of the play off. But the more aggressive your coverage, the more likely a talented receiver burns past you. Defensive coordinators are put into a winless situation.

That’s when they say what the heck, they bring a relentless blitz, even throwing the kitchen sink out onto the field. That’s why the offensive line was such a major priority for the Giants this offseason.

Because Manning is such an intelligent football player and because he has such a sharp and quick release sometimes blitzing can be futile. At the end of the day, they’re just wasting defenders that could be covering receivers and tight ends instead of failing to get to Manning.

The Giants offense will have an incredible season. The defense is the question mark of this team. While there is reason to be optimistic for the defense, they still have to prove it on the football field. That however is a conversation for another article. The moral of this article is that the Giants have all the offensive talent in the world and we should expect big things from Big Blue in 2015.
