ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the New York Giants are preparing to sign Los Angeles Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins as free agency begins today March 9.

Jenkins rejected the Rams offer, a five-year contract worth $45 million. Prior to the 2012 season, Jenkins signed a 4-year, $4,990,139 contract including a $2,069,324 signing bonus, $2,939,324 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,247,535. Spotrac estimates his market value is five years, $46M – 52.6 million with an average salary of $9.2M – $10.5 million per year. /

Pro Football Focus has Jenkins as the 4th best free agent cornerback available. Jenkins has big play ability, both positive and negative. Over his four-year career, Jenkins has allowed five or more touchdowns in every season. He also has a problem missing tackles, something the Giants have issues with. He was the 21st ranked corner by PFF and was a Pro Bowl alternate last year.

Jenkins would be a big splash in free agency for Jerry Reese and would likely mean the Giants are moving on from Prince Amukamara. A big-name corner was certainly on the Giants to-do list in free agency and Jenkins is an improvement on Prince.
