With the New York Giants receiving corp a jumbled mess of either unproven or unknown talent, is there still a need to add someone like Andre Roberts to a group that already accounts for 13 roster spots?

The short answer is no, and after being released by the Redskins last week, Andre Roberts has become another name that has been kicked around as a roster option for a team that has not had a winning season since 2012.

That year, 2012, also happened to be the last and only moderately productive season of Roberts’ career, when he had 64 receptions for 759 yards and 5 touchdowns.  In the three seasons since, he was released by the Arizona Cardinals and has managed only 1059 yards and 4 touchdowns.

  • His productivity is on par with many 3rd or 4th receivers, but the Giants, after letting their own relatively productive receiver, Reuben Randle, walk this offseason, it appears that the Giants are content and confident in the young, homegrown talent that is already on the roster.  In addition, Roberts’ size, at 5’11, 190, really offers nothing new to an offense that features the similarly sized Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard, and Odell Beckham.

The current crop of receivers battling for the few valuable slots left on the roster include Geremy Davis, a sixth round draft pick last year, Dwayne Harris, who more than held his own last season in spot duty, and multiple undrafted free agents, most notably Kadron Boone, Anthony Dable, and Darius Powe. All those guys are over 6 feet tall, offer the potential the Giants are looking for, and demand as many snaps as possible to validate their spot on the roster.

Adding another receiver increases the competition, but there comes a point where on-field experience is sacrificed for competition, and right now, the younger, bigger receivers need the on field experience to prove their worth, something that Andre Roberts has failed to do with his previous two teams.
